Vehicle Story

This 1985 Mercedes-Benz 280SL is a grey-market import with European specifications that include slim bumpers, glass headlights, and switchgear labeled in German. Accompanied by paperwork documenting service and maintenance performed over the last seven years along with a color-matched hardtop, equipment includes heated seats along with power windows and mirrors. Maintenance addressed during the seller's ownership includes replacement of the front brakes and much of the exhaust system, and a Pioneer CD head unit is mounted in the center stack. Finished red over Alpaca Grey leather, this 1985 Mercedes-Benz 280SL is powered by a 2.8-liter M110 DOHC inline-six mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission and is offered on a clear Minnesota title in the seller's name.

The data plate for this R107 280SL says the original color was Grey Blue metallic (906), but the current finish resembles factory-offered Signal Red (568). The 280SL variant of the R107 SL was never sold in the US, and this example is described as a grey-market import. Rest-of-world equipment includes slim bumpers and glass headlight lenses which take the place of US-spec sealed beams. Taillights are the Mercedes-Benz self-cleaning design and fenders wear chrome arch trim. A factory color-matched hardtop is included and the black manually-operated soft top is pictured in place and retracted. The windshield is pictured as containing a star from which a crack has originated.

Wheels are factory-offered five-lug Borbet items wrapped in Michelin tires.

The interior is upholstered in Alpaca Grey leather and unlike a US-spec model, there's a rear seat that's belted for two additional passengers. The front seats are heated and the windows and mirrors are power operated. Leather on the driver's seat is worn through on the entry side and lacquered wood trim shows areas of cracking and flaking. Climate controls are labeled in German and a Pioneer CD head unit is fitted in the center stack.

Instruments are labeled in English and use imperial units. The gauge array includes a 160-mph speedometer and a 7,000-rpm tachometer, along with a clock and gauges for oil pressure, coolant temperature, fuel level, and a fuel economy indicator.

The engine is a Mercedez-Benz M110 2.8-liter DOHC, 12-valve inline-six which uses Bosch Jetronic fuel injection for original output of 182 horsepower at 5,800 rpm and 177 pound-feet at 4,500. The drivetrain consists of a first-generation Mercedes-Benz 4-speed automatic transmission. The seller says the exhaust system has been replaced from the headers back and describes a rebuilt front brake caliper along with other replaced brake components. Documentation in the form of receipts and invoices for maintenance and servicing performed during the seller's ownership period is included.

Photos of the underside are available for viewing the carousel and capture the replaced exhaust system.

This 1985 Mercedes-Benz 280SL comes with a car cover and is sold on a clear Minnesota title in the seller's name.

@Shylee – Why was the windshield not replaced? Was it priced? ...

Good question. To be honest, I never got around to it. The small crack didn't bother me, didn't interfere with driver's sight and and it hasn't advanced in 8 years. Estimates to replace the windshield are between $400 and $600.
