Vehicle Story

This 1956 Chevrolet Bel Air underwent a frame-off restoration in 2010 and received a respray, custom chrome wheels, a reupholstered interior, and modern conveniences such as air conditioning, power brakes, and an iPod-compatible audio system. The drivetrain was subsequently overhauled under the seller’s nine-year ownership, with power coming from a rebuilt 383ci stroker V8 installed in 2021 which is coupled with a rebuilt 4-speed 700R4 automatic transmission. Finished in two-tone Black and Silver Metallic over a complementing reupholstered two-tone silver and black vinyl interior, this 2-door post sedan is now offered with a clear California title in the seller’s name.

Chevrolet’s Tri-Five lineup of passenger cars first launched in 1955 leveraging a squared-off body appearance when compared to earlier model years. A subtle facelift was applied the following year with changes to the grille, sweeping side moldings, and taillights. This Bel Air from 1956 was the recipient of a frame-off restoration in 2010 at a reported $40k expense, receiving a two-tone Black and Silver Metallic paint finish. Brightwork around the perimeter is corrosion-free and includes the front and rear bumpers, grille, hood ornament, side moldings, window trim, mirrors, and dual exhausts at the rear connected to new mufflers.

Chrome-finished five-spoke wheels are installed with newer tires, and handling is assisted by both power steering and power brakes.

The interior is outfitted with reupholstered two-tone silver and black bench seating, tied in with matching door panels, a black-painted dash, and black carpeting topped by Bel Air embroidered floor mats. The dash features a full-width bright bezel and Bel Air anodized badging at the passenger side. The interior received new Dynamat and carpeting in early 2021, as well as a Lokar floating throttle pedal, and additional amenities include a Vintage Air A/C system, a tilt-adjustable steering wheel, power door locks, an alarm system, and an AM/FM radio with iPod connectivity. The trunk is carpeted and houses a new Optima Red Top battery and a fire extinguisher.

Instrumentation includes a 110-mph speedometer with inset gauges for fuel level and coolant temperature. The five-digit mechanical odometer reads approximately 64k miles, and while true chassis mileage is unknown, the seller reports an average of 600 miles per year driven since he acquired the car in 2012.

The rebuilt 383ci stroker V8 was installed in 2021, and engine bay upgrades including an Edelbrock 750 cfm carburetor, a chrome-finished air cleaner, and newer wiring. Power is directed to the rear wheels via a rebuilt 700R4 4-speed automatic transmission that received a rebuild in 2012 and is equipped with a Lokar flexible transmission dipstick.

New Dynomax mufflers were added two months ago. Additional underside photos are available in the gallery.
