This 1968 Chevrolet Chevelle SS two-door hardtop is a genuine SS 396 muscle car that was treated to a rebuild and refurbishment with work completed in early 2014. The big-block 396ci V8 and Muncie M20 4-speed manual transmission are reportedly numbers-matching, and the powertrain has covered about 2,000 miles since receiving performance upgrades including a Holley carburetor, Hedman headers, and an Edelbrock intake manifold. Finished in black over a black vinyl interior, this second-generation Chevelle is now offered with a clear California title in the seller’s name.
The mid-sized Chevelle was launched in 1964 on the General Motors A-body platform and grew into its second generation, which began in 1968. The body was refined with a more rounded, streamlined aesthetic and a rear-quarter kick-up. This top-trim Chevelle SS 396 from that year was subject to a comprehensive restoration that concluded in 2014. The front bodywork was removed from the frame and realigned, and all body panels were straightened, gapped, and aligned. Additionally, some small rust spots were replaced with fiberglass. A respray was applied in black with a matching replacement vinyl roof and is accented by brightwork on the grille, bumpers, window trim, and dual exhaust outlets. Per the seller, the body shop neglected to paint the grille at the time of the respray.
15"x7" Rallye wheels with polished center caps and trim rings sourced from a Corvette are fitted, which provides a "beefier" stance than the stock Chevelle. These are wrapped in BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires. According to the seller, the tire shop installed the wrong valve stems such that they do not fit in the beauty rings.
The all-black interior is in good original condition, though is reported to be showing some age-related wear. The seats are covered in vinyl and are complemented in color-matching doors panels, dash, carpeting, and embroidered floor mats. Amenities include a floor-mounted shifter, an aftermarket audio head unit, and a trunk-mounted spare. The interior dome light is reported to function intermittently due to a loose wire.
Instrumentation comes in the form of a 120-mph speedometer, an analog clock, and a combination gauge that includes the fuel level and coolant temperature. Twin aftermarket auxiliary gauges are mounted beneath the dash, though the water temperature is not working. The 5-digit mechanical odometer reads 48K miles, although true mileage on the chassis is unknown.
The reportedly numbers-matching big-block 396ci V8 was rebuilt within the last 2,000 miles and is rated at 340 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque. Performance upgrades include a Comp Cams camshaft with .485 lift and 268 duration, forged pistons, a Holley 650-cfm double pumper carburetor, Hedman long-tube headers, and an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake manifold. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a Muncie M20 4-speed manual transmission and a positraction rear end with 3.55 gearing. The seller notes that the master cylinder has some surface rust and the rear main seal has a small leak.
The body rides on a UMI Performance Stage 2 full tubular suspension with factory-height performance springs and performance shock absorbers. Stopping power comes from factory-installed front disc brakes. Pictures showing the underside of the car, which has reportedly been treated with anti-rust coating, are available in the photo carousel.
Photos showing the restoration can be found in the gallery.

@colin91 – Yes, it was very minor and was bent back to be straight. It required minimal bending. Despite that, the shop said it was still one of the straighter cars they’d seen. ...
@swedesma - I wanted to build on my previous reply by adding that we did retain the original front bumper. We had it professionally straightened and re-chromed. Well worth it since any reproduction would not have been the same quality as original.
@JakeTX – Hi, great looking car! Do you have any photos of the numbers on the engine, heads, and transmission as well as the trim tag? ...
