This 1949 Ford Custom Club Coupe has been with the seller for the past 14 years after being in storage since 1959 and is now available with what is reported to be its factory engine with just over 31,000 original miles on the odometer. Power comes from a 239ci flathead V8 paired with an updated C4 automatic transmission and is put to the ground by way of the original Hotchkiss rear axle. The car comes equipped with mechanical braking, manual steering, an updated 12-volt electrical system, a Lokar shifter, Pertronix ignition, a replacement fuel tank, and a refreshed interior with all work done keeping the car's authenticity and originality in mind. Located in Valley City, Ohio, this "Shoebox Ford" is offered with documentation and a clean title in the seller's name.
Finished in black under a metallic gold top, the car's "Shoebox" body styling features chrome bumpers and stainless trim along with the chrome wraparound "bullet nose" grille, slab sides, and rear fender skirts. An inspection sticker dating back to 1954 is still affixed to the original windshield glass. The seller notes that the vacuum-operated windshield wipers are non-functional because the vacuum line has been repurposed for use with the transmission.
Whitewall tires come wrapped around a set of painted red wheels fitted with domed chrome hub caps.
The interior has been refreshed professionally with new tan vinyl upholstery over the front and rear bench seats and door panels, a replacement headliner, brown carpeting, and trim and dash paint matched the car's top. While the seats are stock, a Lokar shift lever is fitted and the original six-volt electrical system has been swapped out for modern 12-volt components.
Instrumentation is framed by the correct two-spoke steering wheel with Ford badging and consists of a 100-mph speedometer with integrated dials for fuel level, coolant temperature, oil pressure, and battery voltage. An analog clock is centered in the dash and an aftermarket gauge pod housing a voltage gauge is fitted underneath. The five-digit odometer reads over 31,500 reportedly correct and original miles.
Power is produced by the factory original 239ci flathead V8, shifted through a non-original C4 automatic transmission, and put to the ground by way of the original 4.11-geared Hotchkiss rear axle. The engine sports orange valve covers, Pertronix ignition, new radiator hoses, and three single-barrel carburetors, although only the middle one is functional. The transmission was fitted with a new torque converter prior to installation and exhaust is sent through a set of glass packs leading to the rear of the car.
The chassis has been lowered slightly. Both the steering and four-wheel drum braking systems are mechanically operated and the brakes, which still utilize their original drums, were recently serviced with all new and refreshed parts including the master cylinder. Other replacement parts consist of the fuel tank and pump, and the wheel bearings have been inspected and repacked. Photos of the car's underside are available in the image gallery to the right.
The seller reports the car to be in great running and driving condition and offers supporting documentation of the car's originality with the sale.
