This 1976 Chevrolet Laguna Type S-3 two-door coupe has been driven fewer than 5,000 miles since completion of a cosmetic and mechanical restoration in 2000, and it is powered by a GM ZZ4 crate 350ci V8 paired with a Turbo 400 automatic transmission and limited-slip rear end. This Laguna was originally sold from Modern Chevrolet in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and has been owned by the seller for over 25 years. Upgrades include a Holley carburetor, Hooker headers, and MSD ignition wires. Finished in a respray of Chromalux Black with a Maroon Madrid cloth interior, this final-year Laguna is now offered with a build sheet, uninstalled spare parts including a stock 400ci V8 engine and Turbo 350 transmission, the uninstalled factory exhaust system, service records dating back to 1979, and a clear New York title in the seller’s name.
The Laguna was introduced in 1973 on the General Motors A-body platform as a top-line trim of the midsized Chevelle model. The following year, the Laguna S-3 coupe launched using a revised grille in a body-colored urethane front end, distinct parking lamps, and modified taillights. This example from the model’s final year in 1976 was resprayed Chromalux Black with clear coat in 1996 as part of a restoration process that ended in 2000. The body features louvered rear quarter windows, Type S-3 badging, chrome headlight bezels, and a dual-outlet stainless steel exhaust system.
American Racing 15-inch chrome wheels are wrapped in 235/60 front and 255/60 rear Goodyear Eagle GTII raised-white-letter tires. The front suspension was lowered by one inch using front coil springs; both ends were refurbished with new ball joints and replacement polygraphite bushings from Performance Suspension Technology. The braking system leverages stainless steel lines and features replacement brake shoes and cylinders in the rear, replacement front pads, PowerStop cross-drilled rotors, and calipers rebuilt by Stainless Steel Brakes Corp. with stainless steel sleeves.
Replacement Maroon Madrid cloth bucket seats are fitted with new covers and are from a donor vehicle, as are the dashboard, door panels, and headliner. The console came as standard equipment on all Laguna models, and the cabin uses Dynamat sound deadening material with replacement weatherstripping throughout. Amenities include a tilt-adjustable steering wheel and an AM/FM/cassette radio with a Delco equalizer and four speakers.
Instrumentation is set within a faux woodgrain bezel and includes a 100-mph speedometer, an 8k-rpm tachometer, and gauges for fuel level, coolant temperature, engine vacuum, and oil pressure. The five-digit mechanical odometer reads approximately 83K miles, although true chassis mileage is unknown.
The replacement ZZ4 350ci V8 crate engine was rated at 355 horsepower and 405 lb-ft of torque and has a four-bolt main block, forged connecting rods, cast-aluminum pistons, and a hydraulic roller tappet camshaft. The powerplant has been upgraded with a Holley 650-cfm Double Pumper carburetor, MSD spark plug wires, an aluminum radiator, a Powermaster starter, ceramic-coated Hooker Super Competition headers, and a billet aluminum master cylinder. The battery was relocated to the rear using a Moroso battery box. Maintenance history has been logged in a spreadsheet which shows replacement of the power steering pump and pulley in 2021 along with other prior service items dating back to 1979. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a console-shifted Turbo 400 automatic transmission and a limited-slip rear end with a 3.73:1 ratio.
Photos of the car's underside are available in the carousel and show finishes that were sandblasted and painted Metallic Silver as part of the restoration process.
The sale includes a build sheet as well as uninstalled spare parts such as a 400ci V8 that was previously installed in the car, a Turbo 350 transmission, the factory exhaust system, cross member and driveshaft, and more. The seller has provided a video showing the car idling and driving a short distance below.
