This 1961 Oldsmobile Starfire convertible is 1 of 7,800 produced for the model year and was restored by its current owner, who has had it for the past 25 years. During the restoration process, the car received a new convertible top and interior, fresh front suspension and brake hardware, redone cylinder heads, and a rebuilt carburetor and transmission. Finished in Garnet Mist with a dark red power convertible top over a red interior equipped with front bucket seats and power windows, it gets down the road with the power from a 394ci V8 paired with a 3-speed Hydra-Matic automatic. Available now, this drop-top Oldsmobile comes from the selling dealer with receipts that document its restoration and a clear title.
The Starfire nameplate was inspired by the Lockheed F-94 fighter jet and was subsequently used on a concept vehicle at the 1953 GM Motorama show. Starting with the 1954 model year, Starfire identified Oldsmobile's 98-series convertibles. In 1961, the Starfire turned into a separate convertible model in the Oldsmobile product line. This particular Starfire comes dressed in Garnet Mist with a dark red power convertible top and a matching cover, both of which were replaced when the car was restored by its current owner of the past 25 years. Brightwork is found on the hood, front end, wraparound bumpers, windshield surround, mirror housings, door handles, side trim spears, and rear fascia. Badging consists of "OLDSMOBILE" lettering on the hood and "Starfire" script on the front fenders and trunk lid.
Fourteen-inch wheels with silver covers are set inside of P225/75R14 Mastercraft whitewall tires.
As part of the restoration process, the interior was furnished with new red carpeting and red front bucket and rear bench seating. Amenities include power windows, a vacuum-powered trunk release, a power driver's seat, a padded dashboard, power steering and brakes, a heater/defroster, and the factory AM radio with internals that were converted to be compatible with Bluetooth. Brightwork trim is located on the door sills, door panels, floorboards, seats, center console, and dashboard. The trunk is lined with gray carpeting and contains a spare wheel/tire and a jack.
Instrumentation in the dashboard includes a 120-mph speedometer as well as an analog clock and a fuel gauge, both of which have elliptical housings. The odometer shows a reading of 96 miles, but the car's total mileage is unknown. A trio of white-faced aftermarket Bosch gauges below the Summer Ventilation controls show the coolant temperature, battery voltage, and oil pressure. The center console contains a standalone tachometer with a 6,000-rpm maximum.
Like the top and interior, the 394ci V8 under the hood benefited from the restoration process. It was equipped with rebuilt cylinders and a rebuilt carburetor. A rebuilt 3-speed Hydra-Matic automatic transmission and the rear wheels transmit the engine's output to the road. The pictures in the photo carousel show the state of the engine bay and the V8's air cleaner housing, which features red "OLDSMOBILE Starfire" and "ULTRA HIGH COMPRESSION" labels.
The front suspension and brakes were also included in the restoration. Pictures of the car's undercarriage and dual exhaust system are in the photo carousel.
Sale includes receipts associated with the car's restoration. The video below shows the car starting up and idling along with footage of its exterior and interior.
