1970 Volkswagen Type 2

This 1970 Volkswagen Type 2 Bus was manufactured in March of its model year and has resided in California long-term, drawing power from its rear-mounted, air-cooled 1.6-liter flat-4 paired that is paired with a rebuilt 4-speed manual transaxle. As a versatile vehicle for moving people and cargo, this Bus offers a rear passenger compartment with a variety of seating and sleeping arrangements, complete with storage compartments and woodgrain plank flooring. Finished two-tone turquoise and white over a tan cloth and black vinyl combination interior, this Type 2 is now offered with a clear California title in the seller’s name.

The Type 2 model has origins dating back to 1950 when it was launched under various names as a light-duty commercial vehicle with panel van, minibus, and pickup body configurations. Subsequent design updates were carried out beginning in 1967 including a change to a one-piece windshield in place of the prior split design. This Type 2 microbus from 1970 is painted two-tone with turquoise sides and a white roof. Having resided long-term in California, the vehicle is described as being in solid condition with exception of a few rust spots at the lower edge of the windshield and quarter panels as shown in the photo carousel. The body features white bumpers, headlight caps, and louvered functional side windows.

White-finished 14” steel wheels with chrome dog-dish center caps are wrapped in newer Yokohama Super Van 356 blackwall tires. The brakes have been replaced per the seller, and the suspension leverages half-shaft axles along with constant velocity joints.

The interior is outfitted with a replacement tan cloth bucket seats up front, accented by turquoise vinyl door panels, a black dashboard, and black rubber flooring. A sliding passenger side door provides ingress to the utility cabin, offering a fold-flat black vinyl-upholstered bench, a matching captain’s chair, wood plank flooring, and various storage compartments. Amenities include a wood-rimmed aftermarket steering wheel, side and rear window curtains, and sound-deadening insulation. The door panels have some tears and the flooring shows moderate wear as shown in the photo carousel.

VDO instrumentation is housed within a black plastic bezel and includes a 90-mph speedometer, a fuel gauge, and warning lights for other vehicle systems. The five-digit mechanical odometer reads approximately 60k miles, though true chassis mileage is unknown.

The rear-mounted, air-cooled 1.6-liter flat-4 uses a 12-volt electrical system and was rated at 47 horsepower when new. Power is transferred to the rear wheels via a rebuilt floor-shifted 4-speed manual transaxle.
