Vehicle Story

This 1971 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 is finished in Burnt Orange Metallic with black racing stripes over a black vinyl interior. Built on September 12, 1970 at the Van Nuys, CA Assembly plant, this matching-numbers Z/28 is 1 of 4,268 built for the ’71 model year. Believed to have an accelerated build date from October to September due in part to the looming strike, the Z/28 arrived at its selling dealer, South Bay Chevrolet Company of Chula Vista, CA on September 29th, 1970. The car is powered by its original Turbo-Fire 350ci LT1 Corvette V8 engine, backed by a Muncie 4-speed M20 manual transmission. Now offered for sale, this second-generation Z/28 comes with its original build sheet, Protect-O-Plate, GM shipping data record from NCRS, factory literature, sales brochures, 5 years of service records, and a clear Colorado title in the seller’s name.

Finished in one-year-only Burnt Orange Metallic, black racing stripes span the length of the car. The exterior features wrap around chrome bumpers, Z/28 badges on the fender and grille, rocker panel moldings, and a decklid spoiler. Per the factory build sheet, the car was to be equipped with RPO D80, a taller 3-piece spoiler spanning across the trunk and into the quarter panels. However, due in part to the GM plant strike and parts shortages, a smaller one-piece spoiler was installed by the factory, indicated by an asterisk on the build sheet. The seller notes various chips in the paint as well as some bubbling around the lower corner of the passenger door and lower quarter panel near the rear wheel opening, photos are shown in the gallery.

Factory 15” five-spoke Rallye wheels are wrapped in BF Goodrich Radial TA tires measuring 235/60 on all four corners, with a space-saver spare tire and bumper jack in the trunk. The front wheel bearings have been repacked along with new seals, in addition to new shocks, both front, and rear. Braking is provided by power disc in the front with a recent fluid flush.

The interior features black vinyl strato-bucket seats with headrest, with matching carpets, door panels, and dash. Door panels, armrests, and seat belt retainers are new OEM reproductions pieces. The original radio has been replaced with an older aftermarket unit with cassette deck and equalizer. The factory polished shift lever and shift ball are housed in a black center console mounted between the front seats.

Instrumentation includes a 150-mph speedometer, tachometer with a 6,500 rpm-redline, and analog gauges provided readouts for water temperature, amperage, and fuel level. The five-digit analog odometer shows 61K miles, 500 of which have been added by the seller in 5 years of ownership.

Under the hood sits the original matching-numbers solid lifter 350ci LT1 V8 engine. The car retains the correct finned valve covers and dual snorkel air cleaner with chrome lid. Recent service work includes a new distributor, spark plugs and wires, and a change of all fluids. The engine stamp reads "11L502876" which corresponds with the last 6 digits of the VIN, a photo is provided in the gallery. The Muncie 4-speed M20 manual transmission is correct but not original to the car and was rebuilt in 2016 along with the installation of a new clutch and driveshaft U-joint. Power is transferred to the rear wheels through a 12-bolt rear axle with 4.10:1 posi-traction differential.

A set of long tube headers run into a Flowmaster dual exhaust system with 2.5" pipes that has been recently installed. Additional photos available in the gallery.

The car is documented with the original build sheet as well as Protect-O-Plate, both of which are included along with an NCRS Shipping Data report. All service records from the past five years are available and included in the sale as well. Located in Westminster Colorado, this documented Z/28 is offered on a clean Colorado title in the sellers name.

Thank you to each one of you that have(are) viewed (viewing), watched(watching) and bid(biding) on my auction. I truly appreciate your interest and time. The car is not perfect, however, it is an honest well documented true 1971 Z/28. A car that has an investment grade of "B' according to American Car Collector. I believe the condition code to be between #2 (Fine) and #3 (Very Good). All of that offers a lot of potential future upside increase by most opinions. The reserve is a deal.
