This 1996 Volkswagen Kombi is a Brazilian-market 15-window passenger bus that was imported to the United States and subsequently treated to a professional repaint. It offers newer three-row seating, a straight body, an aftermarket roof basket with a side ladder, and a reportedly mechanically sound powertrain. Power is derived from a refurbished air-cooled 1.6-liter flat-four paired with a 4-speed manual transaxle. Finished in two-tone red and white over a dark gray interior, this second-generation Type 2 bus is now offered with a clear Florida title.
The Volkswagen Bus, built on what Volkswagen referred to as the Type 2 chassis, has origins dating back to the 1950 model year as a light commercial vehicle. In global markets, the Type 2 was sold as the Transporter, Kombi, Samba, or Microbus depending on configuration and geographic location. A second generation was launched in 1967 and offered as a panel van, minibus, or pickup. Cosmetic changes included the addition of a one-piece windshield and revision of the lighting systems. This Bus from 1996 was originally sold in the Brazilian market and later imported to the United States, where it underwent a repaint in two-tone with red lower portions and white for the roof, bumpers, and other trim. The rust-free body features an aftermarket rear-mounted roof basket, a side-mounted step ladder, and barn door-style access to the passenger compartment via the passenger side.
Steel 14-inch wheels with white center caps are wrapped in tires with black sidewall lettering. Suspension architecture consists of half-shaft axles fitted with constant-velocity joints. Stopping power is provided by front discs and rear drums.
The interior is equipped with three rows of seating upholstered in dark gray vinyl and neutral patterned cloth inserts. The lap belts and carpeting are color-coordinated in dark shades. Features include a radio with a cassette player and a spare tire stowed in the rear of the cargo compartment.
Instrumentation is set behind a two-spoke steering wheel and includes a 150-km/h speedometer and a fuel gauge. The five-digit mechanical odometer reportedly reads 84K kilometers, although true mileage on the chassis is unknown.
According to the seller, the refurbished rear-mounted, air-cooled 1.6-liter flat-four runs well, as shown in the accompanying video. Power is fed to the rear wheels via a floor-shifted 4-speed manual transaxle.
