Vehicle Story

This 1978 Chevrolet C30 Cheyenne Camper Special is a one-ton 2WD pickup from long-term California residence. Heavy-duty equipment for this pickup includes an eight-foot longbed, a unique front stabilizer bar, a wiring harness for a slide-in camper, and trim-specific badging. Under the hood, a numbers-matching big-block 454ci coupled with a Turbo 400 3-speed automatic transmission, and recent maintenance includes replacement of the radiator, water pump, hoses, and fluids. Finished in two-tone brown and white over a reupholstered tan vinyl interior, this C30 is now offered with the original badging, a camper communications system, documentation and receipts, and a clear California title in the seller’s name.

The third-generation C/K-Series of General Motors’ pickups launched in 1973 with Rounded Line branding, later experiencing a facelift in 1977 that modified the grille design. This C30 2WD longbed from 1978 is painted two-tone, with brown and upper and lower body finishes and a white center band. The pickup has reportedly resided its entire life in the Bay Area of California, and the body is straight, original, and rust-free aside from some surface rust on the driver side window sill and some corrosion around the taillights, bumpers, and hood. A sliding glass rear window looks out onto the eight-foot bed interior which shows some wear from light duty but no major damage or rust.

White-painted steel 16.5” wheels with bowtie-branded polished covers are wrapped in five-year-old Firestone Transforce HT tires with good tread remaining. The shock absorbers have been replaced, and original Camper Special optioning included heavy-duty front and rear springs and a heavy-duty front stabilizer bar for optimal handling.

The reupholstered Cheyenne-trimmed interior houses a tan vinyl bench and a matching center console with storage compartments. The door panels are accented in brushed-aluminum trim plates and elastic map pockets, and a recent refurbishment added replacement saddle carpeting and matching new headliner material. Amenities include additional insulation, sound-deadening material, and a brushed-aluminum dash accent strip.

Instrumentation includes a 100-mph speedometer and gauges for fuel level, coolant temperature, oil pressure, and voltage. The five-digit mechanical odometer reads 81,948 miles, which the seller states is an actual reading.

The 454ci V8 was rated at 205 horsepower and 335 lb-ft of torque when new and is fed by a four-barrel carburetor. Maintenance history includes a replacement radiator, water pump, hoses, and oil in November 2021. The seller notes that the front valve cover currently leaks and the blower motor is inoperative. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a column-shifted Turbo 400 3-speed automatic transmission.

The sale includes the pickup’s original badging, a camper communications system, and a folder of documentation and receipts from prior ownership. A walkaround video illustrates interior and exterior condition.

@sandridge1943 – Nice truck. Are there any rust issues? Has a/c been converted to R134 and does it blow cold air. Thank you. ...

Thanks! It does have surface rust in the bed as well as at the bottom of the windshield and a little at the bottom of the the passenger side fender. The blower fan has not worked. I put a new heater core and the cab heats up quick. The AC did not have a fan belt when I bought it and I have not replaced.
