This 1971 Datsun 240Z is an unmodified and highly original example that has been single-family-owned since new and received a recent cosmetic and mechanical refurbishment after spending nearly two decades in storage. Originally assembled in February 1971, this S30-chassis sports hatchback offers an independent front and rear suspension, full gauges, factory-correct exterior decals, and a numbers-matching 2.4-liter inline-6 paired with the original 4-speed manual transmission. Finished in Racing Green over a reupholstered Butterscotch vinyl interior, this 240Z is now offered with restoration documentation and a clear Florida title in the seller’s name.
The 240Z, known in certain markets as the Fairlady Z, debuted in late 1969 as a 1970 model. This example from the subsequent year was reportedly driven on a regular basis for its first decade, then placed into storage in 1981 where it resided in safekeeping until 2019. A subsequent restoration was carried out under the seller’s ownership to elevate the car to an original and show-worthy state. Along with the fastidious refurbishment, a fresh coat of Racing Green (907) paint was applied along with factory-correct white accent stripes on the side panels, sail panel logos, and other OEM badging. Brightwork is comprised of the front and rear bumpers, window surrounds, tailpipe, and door handles which were all refinished as part of the cosmetic refreshment.
The original 14"x4.5" date-matching steel wheels with original Datsun-branded hubcaps are wrapped in newer Hankook Kinergy tires. Suspension architecture for this hatchback includes an independent front with MacPherson struts, coil springs, and an anti-roll bar. The rear is independent as well, operating with lower wishbones and telescopic dampers. The seller notes that the factory Bridgestone tires are no longer available and thus could not be ordered and installed.
The two-seat interior is reupholstered in factory-original Butterscotch vinyl high-back bucket seats, color-matched to the door panels, headliner, and center tunnel side materials. Factory-correct black materials are in place for the crack-free original dash, center console, and Datsun-branded embroidered floor mats. Amenities include air conditioning, the hand-refinished original wood shift knob, the factory wood-rimmed steering wheel, a replacement push-button AM/FM radio, and an armrest. The hatch area is carpeted and features matching Butterscotch vinyl over the wheel wells. The original spare tire, which is still holding air, is housed beneath the cargo compartment floor and it is joined by the original jack, tools, wheel chocks, touch-up paint, and more.
Instrumentation is framed by the original three-spoke steering wheel and consists of a 160-mph speedometer, an 8k-rpm tachometer, and a clock and gauges fuel level, coolant temperature, oil pressure, and voltage in the center stack. The five-digit mechanical odometer shows 51,862 miles, which has been documented on the title as actual mileage.
The front-hinged hood opens to reveal the numbers-matching 2.4-liter L24 inline-6 which received a mechanical refresh after the car was moved from long-term storage. Power is directed to the rear wheels via the original console-shifted 4-speed manual transmission.
Photos showing the underside are available in the carousel, and these illustrate the attention to detail applied during the top-to-bottom restoration.
The sale includes documentation from the build as well as spare parts. Two videos are available for viewing below.
