Vehicle Story

This 1970 Plymouth Road Runner two-door a pro-touring sports coupe that underwent a five-year restoration process completed in 2017, having been driven fewer than 3,000 miles since that time and powered by a replacement rebuilt 440ci V8 paired with Chrysler A-727 TorqueFlite 3-speed automatic transmission. This performance coupe received a top-to-bottom refresh that encompassed body and paint work, a modernized interior, 18” aluminum wheels, a disc braking system, and an overhauled suspension. Motor upgrades include performance headers, an aluminum radiator, an Edelbrock intake, and a custom 3” exhaust system, with power sent to the ground via a positraction Dana 60 rear end. Finished in Rallye Red with matte black accents over a refurbished black vinyl interior, this first-generation Road Runner is now offered with manuals, receipts, and a clear Virginia title in the seller’s name.

The Road Runner mid-size performance car launched in 1968, and two years later the body received a new grille, hood, fenders, and quarter panels as part of mid-cycle refresh. This Road Runner from 1970 has an RM21 pillared coupe body style and underwent a complete overhaul within the past eight years under the seller’s ownership, receiving a motor, transmission, and restoration. Previously, the car was held in long-term indoor storage since 1990. The body was stripped to bare metal and some areas received new sheetmetal including the lower rear quarters, trunk pan, and lower rear window quarters. The Rallye Red exterior has matte black accents and received a reseal with two-part urethane sealant as well as an epoxy base primer and a urethane top coat. Brightwork including the bumpers, vent window frames, and other trim accents were rechromed. Finally, the interior and exterior seals were replaced.

Aluminum 18” five-spoke American Racing wheels with polished lips are wrapped in Nitto tires with 2015 date codes that have been driven fewer than 3,000 miles. The suspension was overhauled using Moog front components, reinforced lower control arms, and Firm Feel upper control arms. At the rear, handling is provided by new leaf springs with AR Engineering hanger brackets. The braking system was upgraded to stainless-steel lines, front discs with Disc-O-Tech components, and a rebuilt Bendix double-diaphragm and a CVR electric vacuum pump for the brake booster. The power steering gear box was rebuilt as well.

The all-black interior was converted from the original bench seat, column-shift configuration to bucket seats with a floor shifter, along with complete refurbishment of the re-padded upholstery, door panels, headliner, carpeting, and embroidered floor mats. A three-point seatbelt system was integrated both front and rear, and additional amenities include a Vintage Air A/C system, a B&M floor shifter using the original shifter linkage, and a RetroSound radio. The trunk contains a relocated Odyssey gel battery with a billet tray and quick-disconnect.

Instrumentation is presented by replacement gauges from Dakota Digital, including a 160-mph speedometer, an 8k-rpm tachometer, and auxiliary gauges for fuel level, coolant temperature, oil pressure, and voltage. The digital odometer reads 2,906 miles which reflects mileage driven since completion of restoration in 2018. True mileage on the chassis is unknown.

The replacement 440ci V8 was bored .030 over by Keen’s Automotive Center in Smithfield, Virginia and tuned by PFT Tuning. Features include new forged crank, pistons, and rods along with TTI headers, a 3” exhaust system, a Griffin aluminum radiator, brushless cooling fans, and an EFI fuel tank with a Walbro pump. Additional upgrades include a Milodon oil pan, an Edelbrock top end kit, an Edelbrock EFI intake and throttle body, MegaSquirt tuner software for the sequential EFI system, D585 coils, dual Zeitronix wideband AFR meters, a March pulley aluminum serpentine kit, Painless wiring, and a 140-amp alternator. Power is fed to the rear wheels via a rebuilt, floor-shifted 3-speed Chrysler A-727 TorqueFlite automatic transmission with a Gear Vendor overdrive unit and a positraction Dana 60 3.73 rear end. The seller adds the a Derale Performance transmission cooler with a fan have been installed.

Photos showing the underside are available in the carousel. The underside retains factory undercoating.

The sale includes owner’s manuals and receipts. The seller has provided a video with additional information.

@ILM409 – Upon delivery you get paid right and who pays for shipping? And only enclosed transportation ? ...

Hello and thank you for the question. The post auction exchange of vehicle and payment are up to the buyer and seller as far as the best methods for completing the transaction but payment is generally taken care of before transportation. The winning bidder/buyer is responsible for shipping and handling. In our "Resources" tab you will find two suggestions for shipping and handling, Intercity Lines Inc which is enclosed, and EasyAutoShip which offers open transportation. If you have any other questions regarding the auction process please check out our "How it Works" tab or please give us a call at (480) 845-6600.

@440bird – I have some extra coils, crank sensor, hoses and belt. I carried them with me when I would traveled but I never needed them. I still have the original gauge pack and heater box as well. I also have a 1970 Satellite steel hood with hood pins and a fiberglass 69 six pack scoop. The fiberglass scoop would need to be installed on the steel hood. I will include them items in the auction if the reserve is met. ...

Ok thanks for the reply. Enjoy the holiday.

@Mailman – What a sweet ride , purrs like a kitten , and looks like a lion, good luck with sale , hope u get all and then some for it , Happy holidays, jeff ...

Thanks, Jeff. That big block sounds so good. The motor was built by Keen's Automotive with new forged pistons, rods and crank plus an Edelbrock top end kit. When it was tuned at PF Tuning, it pulled 425 HP at the rear wheels on the chassis dyno. Based on that, the motor is a little over 500 HP, as predicted by Edelbrock.
