This 1978 Mercedes-Benz 450SL is an unmodified and mechanically-sound two-seat roadster powered by a 4.5-liter V8 coupled with a 3-speed automatic transmission. This R107-chassis SL offers a reupholstered interior, a newer audio system, and a color-matched removable hardtop. Finished in Baby Blue over a navy-blue vinyl interior, this R107 450SL is now offered with service receipts and a clear Washington title in the seller’s name.
The Mercedes-Benz R107 two-seat roadster launched as a personal luxury car in model year 1971 with subsequent revisions to aesthetics and option packaging in the following years. This 450SL from 1978 has a rust-free body finished in Baby Blue, accompanied by a matching removable hardtop which can be difficult to remove per the seller. The driver side front fender has a dent as shown in the photo carousel, but other exterior features show well including fog lamps, chrome mirror caps, chrome-accented beltline moldings, and the signature ribbed taillight design.
Factory 14” Bundt wheels with chrome center caps are wrapped in Hankook Kinergy tires with good tread remaining. Driving dynamics are assisted by power steering and power-assisted four-wheel disc brakes.
The interior is fitted with reupholstered navy-blue vinyl bucket seating with a matching fold-down armrest, door panels, dash, and carpeting. Accents include a woodgrain center console, power windows, cruise control, power door locks and a newer CD radio. The seller adds that the driver side window sticks, the air conditioning does not work, and the upper dash pad is cracked as shown in the photo carousel.
Instrumentation includes a 160-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, an inset analog clock, and accompanying gauges for fuel level, coolant temperature, and oil pressure. The six-digit mechanical odometer reads 175k miles, which the seller states is a true reading.
The 4.5-liter M117 V8 features Bosch K-Jetronic mechanical fuel injection was rated at 180 horsepower and 220 lb-ft of torque. Service was performed within the last year, and the seller states that the drivetrain is free of leaks. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a console-shifted 3-speed automatic transmission.
The sale includes service receipts.
