Vehicle Story

This 1966 Chevrolet Corvair convertible is a restored example with an updated audio system, newer Dunlop tires, a power-operated retractable top, and a center console. The rear-mounted 164ci flat-6 is coupled with a 2-speed Powerglide automatic transaxle and said to be in good mechanical condition. Finished in red with a white retractable top over a white vinyl interior, this second-generation Corvair is now offered with a convertible boot and a clear Oregon title in the seller’s name.

The compact Corvair model first went into production in 1959 for the 1960 model year and evolved through two generations, with body styles available in four-door, two-door, station wagon, commercial van, and pickup configurations. The second generation debuted in 1965 on the Z-body platform, offering a few cosmetic updates including the addition of a front chin spoiler and modified taillights. This rust-free Corvair convertible from the following year received a respray in red along with a replacement white cloth power-operated retractable top. The exterior features quad headlights, corrosion-free brightwork, dual chrome sideview mirrors, a white full-width panel at the rear, and a polished exhaust outlet at each corner.

Silver-painted steel Rallye-style wheels with chrome trim rings and bright caps are mounted to Dunlop GT Qualifier tires with good tread remaining. Suspension architecture consists of a fully independent setup with coil springs at each wheel.

The interior is fitted with fold-forward front buckets and a rear bench that were reupholstered in white vinyl, matched to the door panels and contrasted by dark red carpeting and a black padded dashboard. A knob-style Pioneer AM/FM/cassette is mounted in the dash, with a newer AM/FM/CD installed beneath it, connected to door-mounted speakers. Amenities include a center console with an integrated armrest and storage compartment.

Instrumentation comes in the form of a 120-mph speedometer, a fuel gauge, and warning lights for voltage and temperature. The five-digit mechanical odometer reads about 90k miles, although true mileage on the chassis is unknown.

The rear-mounted, air-cooled 164ci flat-6 uses twin carburetors and was rated at 110 horsepower when new. Power is directed to the rear wheels via a column-shifted 2-speed Powerglide automatic transaxle.

Photos showing the underside are available in the carousel.

The sale includes a convertible boot.

@FCABARLE – The ad says "rust free" but the bubbling on the passenger door says otherwise. The heavy coat of paint with all that "orange peel" and the heavy undercoating on parts of the chassis are red flags to me. ...

This Pacific Northwest Corvair is very solid. The undercarriage is original and clean. Small bubbles were noted on the passenger side, Not Major. Check out the video super clean all around. A very nice quality paint job and body on restoration.

@CrazyCarMan – Listing is for a "rust free" car. I see a picture of the leading edge of the passenger that seems to say otherwise. Does that photo depict rust bubbling up under the paint? ...

Regarding the comment from DougStennett, it is my understanding that if a Seller lists his/her vehicle as having a RESERVE on the Auto Hunter website, then the Seller is NOT ALLOWED to provide a "Buy Now" Price. Either the Seller's Reserve is met and the vehicle goes to the Bidder whose bid is the Highest ABOVE the REQUIRED RESERVE, or if the Highest Bid does NOT MEET THE RESERVE, then the Seller's vehicle is offered for Sale on Auto Hunter's parent website, ClassicCars.com. ONLY THEN can the Seller provide a "Buy Now" Price. Indeed, according to Auto Hunter's website Disclosures, this is the reason Sellers choose to first utilize the Auto Hunter website. ATTN: Auto Hunter --> Please review this matter and clarify.

Yes, I would like to know about the air conditioning too. Looks like maybe it was the factory AC, but that included a shroud around the condenser tubes with a couple of fans blowing forehead and exiting out the louvers above. Maybe someone has removed all that and left just the tubes.
