OVERVIEW
This two-owner 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280SL roadster has been with the seller since 1971 and was treated to a restoration completed in 2017 by a specialty facility in Virginia. It has been driven approximately 4,000 miles since the overhaul and is powered by the rebuilt, reportedly numbers-matching 2.8-liter inline-six, which is mated to a four-speed manual transmission. Features include a Becker Europa radio and Phoenix whitewall tires. Finished in red-brown and equipped with a newer black retractable top over a black leather interior, this W113 "Pagoda" 280SL is now offered with a color-matched removable hardtop, hardtop stand, service records, receipts, owner's manuals, and clear title.
EXTERIOR – FEATURES
As part of the restoration completed by Auto Haus of Williamsburg, Virginia between 2015 and 2017, the exterior was refinished in the original red-brown color and equipped with a new black soft top. Features include chrome bumpers with overriders and twin polished exhaust outlets. The seller notes that each door lock has its own key.
EXTERIOR – WHEELS AND TIRES
Steel 14-inch wheels with body-color center caps are wrapped in 185-width Phoenix whitewall tires that were installed approximately 4,000 miles ago in 2019.
INTERIOR – FEATURES
The refurbished two-seat interior is fitted with black leather buckets, matched to the door panels, dash, and carpeting. Features include a Becker Europa AM/FM radio, map pockets, rubber floor mats, lap belts, a clock, and a trunk-mounted spare tire with a vinyl cover.
INTERIOR – GAUGES
The VDO-branded instrumentation includes a 140-mph speedometer, 7K-rpm tachometer, and supporting gauges for the fuel level and coolant temperature. When the seller bought the car in 1971, it reportedly had 40,000 miles on it. The five-digit mechanical odometer has rolled over and reads 13,283 miles, which the seller equates to 213,283 miles.
ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION
The rebuilt and reportedly numbers-matching M130 2.8-liter inline-six uses Bosch mechanical fuel injection and was rated at 168 horsepower and 180 lb-ft of torque when new. It has accrued approximately 4,000 miles since an overhaul. The seller states an oil change was performed in February 2023 when the odometer showed 12,940 (212,940) miles. Power is directed to the rear wheels via a floor-shifted four-speed manual transmission.
