Vehicle Story

This 1971 Toyota Land Cruiser four-wheel-drive SUV was subjected to a body-off exterior and interior restoration and then displayed in a showroom for several years afterward. It comes equipped with a Warn winch mounted on the front bumper, locking front hubs, a roof basket equipped with KC auxiliary lighting, and 15-inch American Racing wheels wrapped in Wild Spirit tires with a matching externally mounted spare. Inside, this 40-series Land Cruiser features reupholstered vinyl front bucket and rear jump seats, a column-mounted manual shifter, manual windows, power controls for the winch, a heater, and manual windows. The 3.9-liter inline-6 engine delivers its power to the road through a 3-speed manual gearbox and a 2-speed transfer case. Finished in red with a white roof over a gray interior, this refurbished Land Cruiser comes with a clear title.

As part of the restoration process, the exterior was repainted in a two-tone color scheme consisting of a red body and a white roof. In the front, it has a Warn winch mounted to the bumper, amber turn signals on the fenders, external hood latches, and a fold-down windshield. A basket equipped with four KC auxiliary lights is mounted on the roof. The rear features a liftgate and a pair of double doors that provide access to the cargo area.

Silver 15-inch American Racing wheels are set inside of Wild Spirit Radial RVT raised-white-letter tires. A matching spare is mounted on the tire carrier at the rear of the vehicle.

The restored interior comes furnished with reupholstered gray vinyl front bucket and side-mounted folding rear jump seats, body-color door panels, a matching dashboard trimmed with black, and black rubber flooring. Features include vent windows, manual main windows, a switch for dispensing/retracting the winch line, a heater, and a column-mounted manual shifter.

Instrumentation consists of a 100-mph speedometer and gauges for the fuel level, oil pressure, coolant temperature, and amps. The five-digit odometer reads 29K miles, but true mileage is unknown.

The engine bay contains a naturally aspirated 3.9-liter I6 connected to a carburetor topped with a Downey open-element air cleaner. Additional hardware includes a pair of batteries, a brake booster, and a dual master cylinder. Power is sent to the road through a 3-speed manual gearbox and a 2-speed transfer case along with locking front hubs.

Additional photos of the underbody, including shots of its Rancho shocks, are in the picture gallery to the right.
