Vehicle Story

This 1964 Ford Thunderbird Landau is a personal luxury coupe that underwent bodywork and rust removal along with mechanical work performed on the 390ci V8 powerplant, which sends power to the rear wheels via a Cruise-O-Matic 3-speed automatic transmission. Recent service includes the replacement of the brake booster, drums, and lines, as well as work to the fuel and cooling systems. The car comes equipped with power steering, factory air conditioning, fender skirts, and a vinyl top. Finished in Wimbledon White with a black Landau top over a black vinyl interior, this fourth-generation Thunderbird is available now with an uninstalled replacement vinyl top, documentation, and a clear Nevada title in the seller’s name.

First launched in 1955 as a personal luxury car, the Thunderbird grew into its fourth generation beginning in 1964 with more formal lines, quad headlights, and available Landau trim. This Thunderbird Landau wears an exterior finish in Wimbledon White (M) and has a contrasting black Landau top. As part of prior bodywork, the chrome trim was cleaned and polished, rust was removed from the trunk, and replacement panels were welded in prior to being rust-proofed and repainted. The seller has included pictures of damaged areas, including the rocker panel aft of the passenger-side front tire and other spots on the lower body panels.

Steel 15-inch wheels with full covers are wrapped in Yokohama Aegis LS4 whitewall tires. Recent chassis maintenance includes the replacement of the brake booster, master cylinder, wheel cylinders, spring kits, shoes, drums, and soft lines. Steering is power-assisted and comes with a new pump, pulley, and lines.

The interior is dressed in all-black with vinyl fold-forward bucket seats split by a center console. The dash and door panels received new material and the headliner was replaced. One of the window motors was replaced as well as the center chrome switch. Additional features include factory air conditioning, power windows, a push-button radio, a woodgrain steering wheel, and an analog clock. There are some upholstery tears as shown in the photo carousel.

Instrumentation consists of a 120-mph sweeping speedometer and pod-style auxiliary gauges for the oil pressure, fuel level, coolant temperature, and amps. The 5-digit mechanical odometer reportedly reads 36K miles, but true mileage on the chassis is unknown.

The 390ci V8 reportedly received a radiator cleaning, new coolant hoses, and a new water pump and thermostat. The fuel tank was cleaned and fitted with new fuel lines and filters and a new sending unit. Power is transferred to the rear wheels via a column-shifted Cruise-O-Matic 3-speed automatic transmission.

The sale includes a folder of build documentation and an uninstalled replacement vinyl top. The 3-minute video below shows the car in greater detail.

@HDRider – Your narrative states that body work has been performed, but the photos reveal some remaining damage. some of the sheet metal is wavy and there are ill-fitting panels. Can you describe the damage the car has suffered? ...

The only ill-fitting panels is the hood that needs to be adjusted from the hinges. Since I have had the car non of the panels have been taken off or adjusted. Part of the rear driver side wheel well was rusted in the front bottom corner where the first pin is mounted to hold the skirt on. We cut cleaned and shaped new steel in. On the same side by the bottom rear window had rust and we fabricated 3 pieces of steel shaped the same and welded that in so the bottom of the chrome trim can clip on with the vinyl top. The pasenger rear bumper / quarter panel was dented in so we pulled that reshaped and filled with just about 1/4 inch from end. I tried to make it so the was little to no bondo.
