This 1979 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am two-door performance coupe has covered 41,048 miles since new and is #56 of 96 total units produced in its configuration as a Macho Edition by brothers Kyle and Dennis Mecham for its model year, powered by a performance-enhanced 250-horsepower 400ci V8 paired with a 4-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. Equipment includes Hooker headers, a dual exhaust system, and a four-barrel carburetor. Finished in Gold Metallic over a tan cloth interior, this second-generation Trans Am is now offered with a letter of authenticity, documentation, a build sheet copy, and a clear Georgia title in the seller’s name.
The Firebird muscle car rode on the General Motors F-body chassis and first launched for 1967. A new generation debuted a few years later in 1970 using a completely restyled body and offered exclusively in two-door coupe configurations. This Firebird Trans Am from 1979 is painted Gold Metallic and features a screaming chicken hood decal, brown body accents, and color-keyed sideview mirrors. After delivery to its originating dealer, the car was customized as a limited-run Macho unit by brothers Kyle and Dennis Mecham as 1 of 96 for its model year. Macho-spec Firebirds were subject to cosmetic and mechanical upgrades for increased power, including a functional shaker hood scoop. This 1979 Firebird has been garage-kept under the seller’s four-year ownership and is said to retain its original finishes both inside and out, displaying decals identifying it as #56 in the Macho series on its front fenders.
Cast aluminum 15” snowflake wheels are wrapped in BFGoodrich Radial T/A raised-white-letter tires with good tread remaining. The suspension uses Koni adjustable shock absorbers and features the WS6 performance package inclusive of a quick-ratio steering box and a larger sway bar. Steering and braking are both power-assisted.
The interior is dressed with tan cloth bucket seats and color-keyed belts, door panels, headliner, dash, center console, and carpeting. Amenities include power windows, factory air conditioning, Soft Ray tinted glass, and a tilt-adjustable steering column.
Instrumentation is displayed within an engine-turned aluminum bezel and includes a 160-mph speedometer, a 6k-rpm tachometer, an analog clock, and auxiliary gauges for fuel level, coolant temperature, oil pressure, and voltage. The five-digit mechanical odometer reads 41,048 miles, which the seller asserts is a true reading.
The 400ci L78 V8 is fitted with a performance-tuned four-barrel carburetor, Hooker headers, and a dual exhaust system contributing to an output of 250 horsepower when compared to the standard Firebird’s 200 horsepower output. Power is directed to the rear wheels via a console-shifted 4-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential.
Photos showing the underside are available in the carousel.
The sale includes a Mecham Design letter of authenticity, a copy of the original build sheet, and additional documentation.
