Vehicle Story

This restored 1921 Oldsmobile flat bed truck is equipped with a 244cid OHV 4-cylinder engine and a 3-speed manual transmission. Features include a hand-fabricated wood rear body, a foldable front windshield, a custom-made convertible top over the seating area, electric headlights, electric starter and a horn. This rust-free maroon and black Oldsmobile with a wood bed and black vinyl interior is available now and comes with restoration photos, photos of the 1997 Collectible Automobile magazine in which it was featured, service receipts, a California Ownership Certificate, and a clear California title in the seller's name.

This 1921 Oldsmobile one-ton truck has been with the seller since 1977 and was restored in 1980-1985. The body sheet metal has been refinished in black and maroon. The 8-in-1 convertible farm payload body, originally supplied by the American Wagon Company of Dixon, Illinois, was completely refabricated by the previous owner. The folding fabric top was custom-made. In addition, the original wooden running boards have been recreated and the passenger running board is fitted with a black metal toolbox. Features include a 4-piece hood, a black grille shell and front fenders, a maroon cowl and windshield, a single driver-side taillight, electric headlights and horn, and a folding windshield.

A set of wooden wheels with spokes fabricated during the restoration process are wrapped in bias-ply tires.

The bench seat mounting area has been recreated from natural wood and the seat itself has been upholstered with black button-tuft vinyl. The remainder of the interior floor and dashboard are constructed of the same wood. All the mechanical controls, including the pedals, steering column, and steering wheel with a fabricated wood rim, have been restored and refinished in black. The 3-speed shifter and handbrake are located on the floorboard to the right of the driver.

The gauges and ignition coil switch are mounted in a maroon metal panel ahead of the driver.  True mileage is unknown, according to the seller.

The power is provided by a 244cid OHV 4-cylinder engine with a factory rating of 40 horsepower and delivered to the road through a 3-speed manual transmission. All the engine components, including the block, ignition system, exhaust manifold, starter, intake, and cloth wiring have been restored. According to the seller, the radiator needs to be replaced. In addition, the seller noted that the engine runs, but not for long periods of time such as 30 minutes. Steel semi-elliptical springs were originally fitted at all four corners of the perimeter frame. The front end has a solid I-beam axle with manual steering; the rear is equipped with a solid drive axle. According to the Collectible Automobile magazine, payloads of up to one ton could be carried by this 3,100-pound truck.

Restoration photos, photos of the 1997 Collectible Automobile magazine in which the vehicle was featured, and service receipts are included with the sale.
