Vehicle Story

This 1984 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham d’Elegance shows an accrued 44,352 miles on the odometer and received an exterior refurbishment in the last three years encompassing fresh paint, custom pinstriping, a replacement vinyl top, and Vogue gold-stripe tires. In addition, new window glass, weatherstripping, and rubber door, hood, and trunk gaskets were installed. This flagship four-door luxury sedan has been in California long-term and draws power from a 4.1-liter V8 paired with an automatic transmission. Its interior features tufted leather, woodgrain trim, and automatic climate control. Finished in metallic copper over a tan leather interior, this Fleetwood is now offered with an owner’s manual, a clean CARFAX report, and a clear California title in the seller’s name.

While the Fleetwood name had been affiliated with some of Cadillac’s upper-tier models since 1934, the title was applied to its own full-size luxury car in 1977 on the same 121.5-inch wheelbase as the DeVille. A styling update in 1980 brought revised front and rear fascias for better aerodynamics. This Brougham sedan from 1984 has resided in California for at least 30 years per its CARFAX history and was repainted with its original Copper Metallica and a clearcoat in 2019 under the seller’s ownership. The exterior features a newer vinyl top, custom pinstriping, and stainless-steel trim. The front and rear bumpers were re-chromed and the exhaust system, window glass, weatherstripping, and rubber door, hood, and trunk gaskets were replaced as part of the refurbishment process. The body wears gold accents for the hood ornament, scripted emblems, and Cadillac crests. The seller notes that the power side mirrors need to be reconnected.

Steel 15-inch wheels with full Cadillac-branded wire hubcaps are set inside of newer Vogue gold-stripe tires.

The interior is upholstered with tufted tan leather seats, matching door panels, a crack-free dash, and an aftermarket suede-like headliner. The cabin offers woodgrain veneer, a Kenwood AM/FM/CD head unit, newer speakers, LED lighting, power windows, power door locks, digital automatic climate control, and a fuel data center. The trunk is carpeted and contains a spare tire with a custom vinyl cover.

Instrumentation includes a sweeping 85-mph speedometer and a fuel gauge. The 5-digit mechanical odometer reads 44,532 miles, which the seller asserts is a true reading.

The 4.1-liter V8 was rated at 135 horsepower and 190 lb-ft of torque when new and received an oil change in March of 2022. Historical maintenance includes the replacement of the fuel tank and sending unit as well as the replacement of the climate control module within the last few years, according to the seller. Power is transferred to the rear wheels via a column-shifted automatic transmission.

The CARFAX report starts in 1992 and shows a history that is clean of accidents or damage. The vehicle passed a California emissions inspection in December of 2020. The sale will include an owner’s manual.

Comments & Questions

Would have loved to bid on this one. Only question mark is the HT4100 engines of that time period. All depends upon level of past maintenance; and not a good combo of metals used. (Aluminum block, cast iron heads, aluminum intake.) Am personally way too familiar with these engines. They are prone to develop head gasket and main bearing failures. Cooling became an issue - so much so that Cadillac issued a TSB to utilize special “tabs” every flush and advised a yearly flush. Reason - porosity was a problem. They drive like a sofa on wheels. Mileage on the highway is respectable. Saw Candoo40’s three simultaneous bids on this and one other auction (both at $12,000) ; and a third at a higher bid that is now closed and not won. Not interested in a bidding war on this model as it is priced too high now with mechanical unknowns. And leery of the bidding activity here. If all legit, I wish the new owner here the best with this car. Really the finest highway model I have ever driven long distance.
