This 1976 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 is an off-road-capable 4WD utility vehicle with an open-cab layout, removable doors, a cloth top, and an ARB tubular bumper with a winch. Under the hood, the fuel-injected Chevrolet 350ci V8 is upgraded with performance headers, an aluminum radiator, and a Holley throttle body, and sends power to the ground through a TH400 3-speed automatic transmission, a 2-speed transfer case, a Ford 9-inch rear end, and 35-inch BFGoodrich tires. This FJ40 has been with the seller in California for 27 years and has an interior featuring replacement buckets and a modern sound system. Finished in aqua blue over a black vinyl interior, this Land Cruiser is now offered with receipts and a clear California title in the seller’s name.
The full-size J40 series of Land Cruisers first debuted in 1960 as body-on-frame, four-wheel-drive vehicles with available sport utility and pickup body styles. This FJ40 Land Cruiser from 1976 is painted aqua blue with a contrasting removable black soft top and plastic windows. The exterior features LED auxiliary lighting, a snorkel, a tubular ARB front bumper with a winch, rock slider rails, a custom rear bumper with a spare tire and rack, and a dual exhaust setup. The rear quarters are wrapped in diamond plate aluminum panels. The seller notes that there are some paint imperfections and slight surface rust present.
Mag aluminum wheels are set inside of 35-inch BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain tires with good tread remaining. The vehicle has been lifted through an axle-over conversion and reportedly features replacement OEM springs. The power-assisted steering is from Saginaw. The braking system has a new master cylinder and booster.
The cabin is fitted with upgraded black vinyl bucket seats and blue harnesses in the front and a two-tone gray fabric bench in the rear. Amenities include a modern AM/FM/CD audio head unit, a passenger-side grab handle, an under-dash heating unit, and a rear-mounted Oasis air compressor.
Instrumentation includes a 100-mph speedometer and auxiliary gauges for the oil pressure, fuel level, coolant temperature, and voltage. The five-digit mechanical odometer shows 11K miles, although true mileage on the chassis is unknown.
The Chevrolet 350ci V8 is reported to run well and has been upgraded with performance headers, a Holley throttle body and fuel injection, a 110-amp alternator, and an aluminum radiator with an electric fan. A 22-gallon reserve fuel tank delivers additional fuel to the engine. Power is sent to all four wheels via a floor-shifted TH400 3-speed automatic transmission and a 2-speed transfer case. The front end uses an Auburn limited-slip differential and the rear end is equipped with a Ford 9-inch axle with a Detroit locker.
The sale includes receipts. The vehicle comes with a certification sticker from the California Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) that reportedly allows for smog compliance without smog equipment.
