This 1968 Mercury Cougar XR7 has been with the seller for approximately 50 years and is powered by a 302ci V8 engine backed by a C4 automatic transmission. Features include power steering, an overhead console, manual brakes, and an aftermarket cassette stereo. This Black Cherry Cougar with a black vinyl top and Dark Red Crinkle and Clarion knitted vinyl interior comes with the original owner’s manual, jack, and tire tools; the removed original radiator; two uninstalled radios, including the original; and a clear Pennsylvania title in the seller's name.
The exterior is finished in Black Cherry (Code B) as shown on the door warranty tag. Features include hideaway headlights, a fender-mounted antenna, a black vinyl top, wheel opening and rocker moldings, white side striping, reverse lights, working sequential taillights, and chrome bumpers.
A set of original steel wheels with correct full hub caps are wrapped in new Hankook Optimo H724 whitewall radial tires.
The front bucket seats and rear seats are upholstered in Dark Red Crinkle and Clarion knitted vinyl and surrounded by coordinating interior trim, headliner, and door panels. Features include manual windows, maroon carpeting, rubber front floor mats, an overhead console with map lights, a black dashboard with woodgrain trim and a maroon top pad, and an aftermarket AM/FM cassette stereo. The steering column is topped with a 2-spoke steering wheel with a half horn ring, a wood grain accent panel, and a woodgrain rim.
A 120-mph speedometer with an odometer reading 173,000 miles, 6K-rpm tachometer, and functional gauges for the amps, fuel level, coolant temperature, and oil pressure are mounted in a simulated woodgrain panel. The seller reports that the odometer showed approximately 60k miles when she acquired it around 1972, and the current mileage is accurate.
The power is provided by a 302ci V8 engine backed by a C4 automatic transmission. Features include Power By Ford stamped steel valve covers, power steering, and a closed-element air cleaner with a Mercury 302-2V logo. An aftermarket radiator has been installed and the seller will include the original radiator with the sale. According to the seller, the brake master cylinder has been replaced.
This unibody Cougar was factory-equipped with a coil-spring-mounted independent front suspension and a leaf-spring-mounted solid rear drive axle. The seller states that corrosion is present on the torque boxes and floor pan, photos are provided in the gallery. New rear brakes, rear shocks, and leaf springs have been installed. A video of the vehicle idling and showing light operation can be viewed below.
The original owner’s manual, jack, and tire tools; the removed original radiator; and two uninstalled radios are included with the sale of the car. The unit with knobs is reported to be the original radio.
