Vehicle Story

This 1973 Volkswagen Thing has spent the last 16 years as a weekend driver. Power is provided by an air-cooled 1600cc flat-4 engine coupled with a 4-speed manual transmission. Features include a folding windshield, high-back bucket front seats, removable doors, an aftermarket stereo with a CD player, and new tires. This garage-kept white Thing with a black vinyl interior and a black fabric top is available now and comes with a clear Washington title from the seller. The vehicle had previously been listed and sold on 4/15/22 and the winning bidder backed out of the sale through no fault of the seller. The non-paying bidder has been removed from the site and the vehicle is now relisted for auction.

Imported into the United States only in 1973 and 1974, this VW Thing is finished in white and shows minor rust staining around the body seams. The rear engine lid and a portion of the body under the left taillamp have been treated with gray primer. Body features include U.S.-spec front turn signals and taillights, a folding windshield, removable doors, and a black fabric convertible top.

Aftermarket deep-dish wheels with full VW-branded hubcaps are wrapped in new Goodyear radial tires.

The front bucket seats along with the rear folding seat are covered in black vinyl. The metal surfaces of the interior are finished in white to match the exterior. The steel dashboard has a black top pad and houses an aftermarket stereo with a CD player.

A 100-mph speedometer with an integrated fuel gauge is mounted behind the steering wheel.

The power is provided by an air-cooled, dual-port 1600cc flat-4, which produced 46 horsepower when new. The rear-mounted engine comes coupled with a 4-speed manual transmission that sends power to the rear wheels. According to the seller, the car runs and drives well and has been meticulously maintained.

This Thing came from the factory with a 4-wheel independent suspension and manual drum brakes.

@jsroley – Any changes to engine? ...

Engine is bone stock, runs and drives great. Does leak a little oil but very little.

@jsroley – Steering box tight and straight? ...

Good morning The front bumper does seem to be tilted a little bit. It’s steers and drives great. Cruises straight down the road no problem!
