This award-winning 1969 Mercury Cyclone two-door fastback is equipped with a limited-availability Spoiler Package as a tribute to Cale Yarborough winning the 1968 Daytona 500 and it showcases good-condition finishes inside and out, Firestone Wide Oval tires, and a full console. Under the hood, power comes from a 351ci V8 paired with a Select-Shift 3-speed automatic transmission. This Cyclone was originally delivered to Athens Lincoln-Mercury, Incorporated in Athens, Georgia when new and reportedly rust-free. Finished in two-tone white and red over a dark red vinyl interior, this third-generation Cyclone is now offered by the selling dealer with a Marti Report, awards received, documentation, and a clear Illinois title.
Launched in 1964, the Cyclone muscle car model replaced the S-22 as a performance-oriented variant of the Mercury Comet. In 1968, the Cyclone received its own nameplate and grew into its third generation with revised styling and engineering. This Cyclone from the following year is painted two-tone White (M) and Red (T), with a flat black double stripe and a flat black hood scoop. This vehicle is outfitted as a Cale Yarborough Special, featuring a limited-production Cyclone spoiler package that originated when Cale Yarborough won the Daytona 500 in 1968. This Cyclone was first sold in Georgia when new and shows solid rust-free floorboards and sheetmetal per the selling dealer, having received a senior award from the Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA) in 2015 for its condition and preservation. The vehicle is also in the Talladega Spoiler Registry, and the body features quad headlights, hood retention pins, Cale Yarborough fender decals, color-keyed racing mirrors, and a rear spoiler.
Styled steel wheels with polished trim rings are mounted to Firestone Wide Oval raised-white-letter tires with good tread remaining, and steering is power-assisted.
The cabin is fitted with Dark Red Comfortweave vinyl fold-forward bucket seats (8D), matched to the crack-free dash, door panels, and carpeting. Amenities include lap belts, a console, and an electronic AM/FM radio. The trunk is lined with a plaid vinyl mat and contains a spare tire.
Instrumentation is housed within a wood veneer bezel and includes a 120-mph speedometer and a fuel gauge. The five-digit mechanical odometer reads 34k miles, although true mileage on the chassis is unknown.
The 351ci V8 is said to run well per the selling dealer, and power is fed to the rear wheels via a console-shifted FMX Select-Shift 3-speed automatic transmission.
Photos showing the underside are available in the carousel.
The sale includes a Marti Report, documentation, and show awards.
