This two-owner 1989 Chevrolet Caprice Classic station wagon features a refreshed drivetrain with an upgraded Corvette-sourced fuel-injected 350ci V8 mated to a 700R4 4-speed automatic transmission and a limited-slip differential. This Caprice was purchased new in Zelienopile, Pennsylvania and has been owned by the seller for the last 13 years, undergoing both cosmetic and mechanical enhancements during that timeframe. Features include a tunable ECU, a modern audio system, auxiliary gauges, power convenience options, and an Airlift suspension. This Caprice was used in two film productions and comes with comprehensive service and maintenance history documentation. Finished in maroon over a matching cloth interior with late-model bucket seats, this third-generation Caprice is now offered with two sets of wheels, the factory seat, many other spare parts, a clean CARFAX report, and a clear title in the seller’s name.
The Caprice name initially came to market in the mid-1960s as a luxury trim package for the Impala four-door hardtop and later moved into position as the flagship full-size Chevrolet model. The third generation launched in 1977 on a downsized platform from prior models, experiencing stylistic and engineering changes through 1990 when the body style phased out. This Caprice Classic station wagon from 1989 exhibits a reportedly accident-free body in maroon and features replacement plastic bumper fillers. Along with the repaint, there were some areas of the body that were prepped and refinished to correct surface rust. The exterior is accented in chrome brightwork, slim color-matched sideview mirrors, and a luggage rack. The seller has provided images in the carousel illustrating areas where there are remaining cosmetic blemishes consistent with age.
Machined aluminum 17” wheels sourced from a 1990's Chevrolet Impala SS are mounted to Kelly Edge AVS 225/65-series tires. Underpinnings feature Moog coil springs up front with heavy-duty gas shocks, partnered with Moog load leveler coil springs and an Airlift adjustable suspension out back. The braking system uses discs up front and drums in the rear.
The interior is fitted with maroon cloth bucket seats sourced from a 2012 Chevrolet Impala which are split by a center console from the same vehicle. A third-row jump seat folds down into the floor panel. Features include a power driver’s seat, cup holders, storage bins, rubber floor mats, cruise control, woodgrain trim, air conditioning, power windows, a keyless entry system, and hard-wiring for a rear camera. The audio system is a Pioneer Bluetooth-enabled head unit connected to a combination of Kenwood and Infinity speakers. An Airlift compressor is mounted in the rear tool compartment area in the rear of the cabin. The seller notes that the factory power-operated antenna does not work.
Instrumentation includes a factory 85-mph speedometer and a fuel gauge along with aftermarket readouts for a digital tachometer, coolant temperature, oil pressure, and rear Airlift pressure. The five-digit mechanical odometer reads 63K miles, and according to the CARFAX it has rolled over; actual mileage is 163K per the seller’s documentation and history with the vehicle.
The upgraded 350ci V8 was sourced from a Chevrolet Corvette and reportedly had 40K miles on it at the time. The engine was rebuilt with new rings, bearings, and seals. A tuned-port injection system was installed, and additional upgrades include aluminum heads, an advanced cam, a Holley canister fuel filter, a Walbro high-pressure electric fuel pump, Bosch Demon injectors, a K&N air filter, a new exhaust system, and an adjustable PCV valve. The ECU is an aftermarket fully-tunable self-learning “Dynamic EFI” P4 controller. Maintenance has been carried out on a regular basis with 5W30 synthetic oil. The water pump, pulleys, and exhaust manifolds were sourced from a 1983 Chevrolet Caprice station wagon. The alternator has been upgraded to 120 amps, and additional maintenance included a new starter and battery in 2021. There are comprehensive additional details on the cooling and exhaust system outlined in the documentation in the photo carousel. Power is directed to the rear wheels via a rebuilt 4-speed 700R4 turbo overdrive transmission, and the rear end is an 8.5-inch 10-bolt setup with a limited-slip differential.
The underbody has been treated with 3M rubberized undercoating. Photos showing the underside are available in the carousel.
The CARFAX report shows a vehicle history that is free of accidents or damage. The vehicle passed a Vermont safety inspection in August of 2021. The sale includes a variety of removed or uninstalled parts, including the original split-bench front seat, an additional set of 15-inch steel wheels with Firestone winter tires, floor mats, hub caps, engine components, a Chilton’s repair manual, and various other mechanical and accessory items as shown in the photo carousel. Video footage of the vehicle being started, idling, and driven can be found below.
