Vehicle Story

This rust-free 1971 Oldsmobile 4-4-2 Hardtop Coupe reportedly has all of its original sheet metal and a numbers-matching drivetrain consisting of a 455ci V8 connected to a 3-speed automatic transmission. The original owner reportedly kept this car for 40 years before selling it to the second owner, who sanded and repainted the body, installed new interior components, and rebuilt the engine and transmission in 2019. The third and current owner has had it for approximately two months. Exterior features include chrome bumpers, a dual-scoop hood with twist-lock hood pins, a rear wing, and dual exhaust outlets. The cabin offers front bucket seats, a center console, a rear bench seat, air conditioning, and a push-button radio. Refinished in red with black hood stripes and a black vinyl roof over a black vinyl interior, this second-generation 4-4-2 is available now and comes with a clear Michigan title in the seller's name.

According to the seller, the second owner took possession of this 4-4-2 in 2011 and let it sit for seven years before putting it through a restoration process that involved sanding and repainting the original rust-free sheet metal red and refurbishing the interior and drivetrain in 2019. Exterior features include chrome bumpers, the reportedly original W25 air induction hood with dual scoops and a flapper air cleaner under the hood, twist-lock hood pins, a black vinyl roof, a body-color rear wing, and dual exhaust trumpets.

The 5-spoke wheels feature body-color centers and come equipped with BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires.

The black interior is furnished with black vinyl front bucket seats and a matching rear bench seat. According to the seller, it retains the original dashboard, gauges, locking front center console, and seatbelts. As part of the 2019 restoration process, the cabin was outfitted with a new headliner, black carpeting, and door panels. Features include simulated woodgrain accents, power brakes, manual crank windows, air conditioning, and a push-button radio.

Instrumentation consists of a 120-mph speedometer, an analog clock, a fuel gauge, and warning lights for various vehicle systems. The 5-digit odometer shows 40K miles, which the seller states are original miles. The seller reports that the fuel gauge is not currently working.

This 4-4-2 is powered by the combination of a 455ci V8 and 3-speed automatic transmission, both of which are numbers-matching, according to the seller. Both were rebuilt as part of the 2019 restoration process under previous ownership. A cold start video is available for viewing below.

Several additional photos showing the state of the undercarriage are available in the gallery to the right.

@BlaineS – Does the car have power steering? Do you know what gear ratio is in the rear end? Thank you ...

Yes it has power steering. I believe it’s 355 gears but I’m not 100%.

@HankP88 – I have a couple more questions for you: 1) Is there anything AT ALL besides the gas gauge that does not work/needs repair or attention? For example, I see in the photo that the reservoir for the windshield washer has no cap and no hose running to the pump. Are bidders to assume the windshield washer does not work? How about the wipers, do they work? 2)Could you post or email photos of the undercarriage/frame/suspension components so bidders can see the condition. 3)The write-up says miles shown on the odometer are believed to be correct/original; do you have any kind of evidence to support that claim--vehicle title from your state/other ownership documents; maintenance records or receipt that have a date of service and mileage on the car at that time? 4)The write-up says you've only owned the car for 2 months; why are you selling it? Thanks in advance for taking the time to answer my questions and--hopefully--add the requested photos. I'm not trying to be a PITA, but I'm very interested in the car and need more information prior to my bidding on it. ...

I’ll try and answer all your questions. Yes the washer fluid tank doesn’t have a cap or hose. The wipers do work. Sorry I don’t have any docs on the car. The miles and the history of the car is info I received from the previous owner, who did the restoration. He bought it from the original owner in 2011. Apparently he know the original owner. As far as why I am selling, honestly I just need the money. Hope that helps. Anyone is more than welcome to come see the olds or hire an inspector.

Sorry for question No. 2 about additional pictures for the undercarriage. I see them in the photo carousel (and saw them previously) but am following two 442's currently for sale and the other ad is missing photos.
