Vehicle Story

This 1983 Porsche 911 SC Targa has driven 2,000 miles since undergoing an exterior, interior, and mechanical refresh. It is powered by a rebuilt air-cooled 3.0-liter flat-6 paired with a 5-speed manual transaxle. This 911 was owned on the west coast until 2017 when it was relocated to the New England region, where it remains today. Features include fog lamps, bucket seating, air conditioning, and a Sony sound system. Refinished in red over a reupholstered black leather interior, this 911 is now offered by the selling dealer with receipts back to new, a clean CARFAX report, and a clear title.

The 911 SC (Super Carrera, according to Porsche) model debuted in 1978 with an evolution of the 911 sports car’s exterior design and engineering, and a more refined driving experience than prior models. This 911 SC from 1983 was assembled in October 1982 and features a repainted red exterior and a refinished removable black Targa top. The body is equipped with fog lamps, a chin spoiler, black body accents, and rear bumper guards.

Chrome 16-inch Fuchs wheels with Porsche crests are wrapped in a combination of Toyo Proxes and BFGoodrich tires.

The cockpit is fitted with reupholstered black leather bucket seats, matched to the door panels, dash, console, carpeting, and embroidered floor mats. Amenities include air conditioning, power windows, cruise control, and a Sony AM/FM/CD head unit. The selling dealer notes that the quartz analog clock is not working.

VDO-branded instrumentation includes a 160-mph speedometer, 7K-rpm tachometer, and auxiliary gauges for the fuel level, coolant temperature, oil pressure, and voltage. The six-digit mechanical odometer reads 156K miles, which is supported by the CARFAX report.

The rebuilt air-cooled 3.0-liter flat-6 at the rear features Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection and has been well maintained according to the selling dealer. Since being rebuilt, it has accrued 2,000 miles. The CARFAX report shows service performed in July of 2019 that included an oil change and the replacement of the distributor cap, spark plugs, and spark plug wires. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a console-shifted 5-speed manual transaxle. The selling dealer reports that the gearbox has no issues and the clutch is in perfect condition.

Stopping power comes from power-assisted disc brakes. Additional photos showing the underside are available in the carousel to the right.

The CARFAX report shows a vehicle history free of accidents or damage, with the first record entered in 1992 in California. The vehicle passed a Massachusetts safety inspection in 2019. The sale includes service records back to new.

@BKAlumMIT – @Silverstone, I think any details of the rebuild would be helpful. People like to see the extent of the work and what components were used. ...

I’m not at my computer right now and won’t be until mid morning. There was a complete engine and transmission rebuild done at about 135,000 miles and I think 1998. I do have the receipts for the work done and I’m happy to share them. It was about a $9000 job and at that time

@BKAlumMIT – Thanks @Silverstone. The oil leak sounds like a non-issue for me. My '86 left a drop or two everywhere it stopped and was still quite live-able. The timing chain is a fairly big deal for these 3.0 engines. The later 3.2 had hydraulic tensioners and most people upgraded the 3.0 to that style in order to prevent you know what. Lovely car, and in my opinion this style of Targa is the best body type of the air cooled 911s. ...

Regarding the hydraulic tensioners, I found a receipt for a complete engine rebuild done at around 134,000 miles the date on that receipt is in 1998.

@BKAlumMIT – Oh, and, oil leaks? I always expect some, just a question of how much, does it always leave a drop or two everywhere you park it? I previously had an '86 and it did! Thank you! ...

There is always a small drip of residual oil on the bottom of the motor but quite honestly in terms of any serious leaks none I have it parked for a week in one spot and I don’t have any spots on the ground
