Vehicle Story

This all-terrain-ready 1972 Jeep CJ-5 spent several years in a desert environment and underwent a complete tear-down and rebuild during the seller’s 17 years of ownership. It comes equipped with an upgraded suspension, 33-inch BFGoodrich tires, four-wheel disc brakes, a roll bar, Warn locking hubs, and more. Under the hood, the 304ci V8 is fed via FiTech fuel injection and sends power to all four wheels through a 4-speed manual transmission and a dual-range transfer case. This CJ is accompanied by a full-size spare tire, a removable black hardtop, and two sets of doors. Finished in a gray Rhino Linings finish over a two-tone gray and black interior, this CJ-5 is now offered with the removed original carburetor, muffler, and headers; removed previous hydraulic clutch; build documentation; receipts; and a clear Indiana title in the seller’s name.

The CJ (Civilian Jeep) series of off-road utility vehicles dates back to the mid-1940s when mass production started under the direction of Willys Jeep. The CJ-5 debuted approximately a decade later and was restyled in the early 1970s after Jeep was acquired by American Motors. The wheelbase was stretched and a new box frame was utilized from that point onward. The body of this 1972 CJ-5 was disassembled and sandblasted prior to receiving a repaint and a Rhino Linings finish both inside and out. It comes with a black Rally Tops hardtop along with full doors and half-doors. Lighting has been upgraded to LED with exception of the headlamps. Additional equipment includes a tubular front bumper with tow hooks, fender flares, nerf bars, a swing-out rear tire carrier with a cover, and a hitch receiver. The seller notes some cosmetic damage on the hood and a misaligned rubber molding on the passenger-side window.

Chrome 15-inch wheels are surrounded by 33-inch BFGoodrich KO2 All-Terrain T/A raised-white-letter tires, including the spare.

The interior features a full roll cage and is fitted with heated high-back Corbeau bucket seats up front. Panels are lined with gray Rhino Linings material with black trim for the roll bars and other accents. The rear area has been converted into a storage area covered in diamond plate with two locks to secure the storage area. Features include a locking Tuffy locking center console with a built-in ignition switch, a NOAM Bluetooth-compatible stereo system connected to marine speakers, an auto-dimming rearview mirror with a compass, charging ports, and a new steering column with a Grant lockable and removable steering wheel.

Aftermarket instrumentation includes a 120-mph speedometer, 6K-rpm tachometer, and auxiliary gauges for the coolant temperature, oil pressure, fuel level, and voltage. The digital odometer reads 1,482 miles, which reportedly indicates the mileage driven since the rebuild process was completed. True mileage on the chassis is unknown.

The 304ci V8 has been upgraded with a FiTech fuel injection system and a 21-gallon polyethylene fuel tank with an in-tank fuel pump and a skid plate. Additional equipment includes an HEI ignition system, an aftermarket radiator with an electric fan, out-of-body headers coupled with Aero Chamber mufflers, and a Painless wiring harness fuse block. Power is sent to the ground via a hydraulic clutch, a 4-speed manual transmission, a dual-range transfer case, and a PowerTrax locking rear differential.

The vehicle has Warn manual locking front hubs. The suspension components were refinished as part of the rebuild process. Stopping power comes from four-wheel SSBC-USA disc brakes. The seller notes that the emergency brake assembly is not connected.

The sale includes the vehicle's removed original carburetor, muffler, and headers; removed previous hydraulic clutch; build documentation; and receipts. The seller has provided videos showing the vehicle's exterior, interior, and driving features.

The 1972 Jeep CJ5 An engine compression test was conducted to find all cylinders in the range 145 Psi. Spark plug were gap checked and reinstalled, plug wire were checked and installed. Header gaskets were checked and replaced. A walk around with the engine running was added to the videos. This allows you to see a stable engine running, and hear both sides of the exhaust system in that there are no cross over pipes on this exhaust system. If you have additional questions, please post them on this site and I will be monitoring.

@Mac51 – I take that back 4 cylinders at best ...

Mac51 I am looking into your comments. That engine has headers with high flow mufflers. My wife was setting on the passenger side running the phone camera. The Jeep is pretty loud and with no crossover pipe you mainly hear the exhaust side you setting near. However the engine is very strong and has no problem with the hills in the area I live. I will keep everyone informed.

Motor sounds very tired like running on maybe 6 cylinders. I was shocked to hear it run. Surely didn’t do the sale any help. Sounds like a junker. Good luck!
