Vehicle Story

This 1959 Morgan Plus 4 drophead is powered by a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder engine backed by a manual transmission. Features include right-hand drive, front disc brakes, a front driving light, and a rear-mounted spare. This refinished red Morgan with a new black convertible top over a new black leather interior is available now and comes with the original tools, service records, and a clear Colorado title.

The exterior has been refinished in its original shade of red. Features include chrome bumpers, a front driving light, dual tri-bar headlights, fender-mounted mirrors, turn signal lights, and a 4-piece hood with a leather retaining belt. Additional features include a rear-mounted spare tire, a new cloth convertible top, and removable side windows.

A set of silver steel knock-off wire wheels is wrapped in newer Michelin radial tires.

The front seat and door panels were recently upholstered with black leather. Features include wood dashboard and door trim, black carpet throughout, a floor-mounted manual shifter, and a right-hand-drive steering column with a banjo steering wheel.

A 110-mph speedometer, 6K-rpm tachometer, and gauges for the coolant temperature, amps, oil pressure, and fuel level are located in the wooden dashboard ahead of the driver. The odometer reads 43,176 miles, but the true mileage is unknown.

Power is provided by a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder engine backed by a manual transmission. Underhood features include recently rebuilt dual carburetors, a chrome valve cover, manual steering and brakes, and a new battery and fuel pump.

This Morgan came factory-equipped with an independent front suspension and a solid rear drive axle. An alignment was recently completed. Braking is provided by front discs and rear drums.

The seller will include the original tools and service records with the sale.

@Azguy238 – Hi, very pretty DropHead. What is the "real" chassis # of this car? It's located on the crossmember under the right hand seat....4 digits. The # you are showing on the auction is the engine #. Thanks, Wayne ...

I will be happy to check that for you next week When I get to the shop as long as it does not require removing the seat and interior to find it.

Drophead’ is a 1950s term British car manufacturers once used to describe a car with a well-made convertible top and fixed windows (as opposed to ‘roadsters’ that had side curtains and very simple tops). Jaguar’s dropheads had actual roll-up windows, where as Morgan’s are sliding glass panes in chrome frames that can be removed and stowed in the car, as they are in our pictures. The sophisticated top that Morgan provided on the dropheads had three different positions available to drive in. The top could be all the way up, or just the front portion could be opened like in the picture. Plus, the rear window is zippered, so it can be opened. Or, the entire top could be folded down. The window frames attach to the top of the doors when weather protection is needed. This body style was Morgan’s most expensive when new and is not often found today. This car was delivered in the San Francisco Bay Area when new, even though it was right-hand drive. It lived an easy life in NorCal until coming to Colorado several years ago. Some Morgans had English Ford engines, but the vastly more popular choice was the same engine as the Triumph TR-3, which this car has. In addition to more power, it makes sourcing parts far simpler. The engine has recently been fully serviced and recent work included rebuilding the carburetors. Given its low mileage and the benign climates where it’s lived, the body & frame are in excellent condition. The car has always been Red/Black, and was recently repainted in its original color and a new leather interior & top were professionally installed. Owned by a significant all-British classic car collection, this Morgan has been well maintained and just had its service updated with recent tires, new battery, fuel pump and wheel alignment. It is a delightful sports car to enjoy, with its right-hand-drive that forces you to acclimate to shifting with your left hand!
