Vehicle Story

This 1973 Porsche 914 Targa two-seater sports car has received work to the fuel system, suspension, and electrical system along with rustproofing and sound damping. It was manufactured in February of its model year and is powered by a 1.7-liter flat-4 paired with a 5-speed manual transaxle. Equipment includes pop-up headlamps, a replacement exhaust system, and newer tires. Finished in two-tone black and yellow over a black vinyl and cloth interior, this 914 is now offered with service records, uninstalled vinyl graphics, a maintenance log, and a clear California title in the seller’s name.

The mid-engined 914 sports car first was a collaborative effort between Porsche and Volkswagen released in 1969. Evolutionary changes were made in the years that followed, including updates to the bumpers, headlight surrounds, and exterior trim. This 914 Targa from 1973 was reportedly stored for 20 years and has a two-tone paint scheme with a black body and yellow accents on the bumpers and rocker panels. Features include pop-up headlamps, vinyl-wrapped bumpers, and Porsche badging on the engine cover mesh. The body received rustproofing and some replacement seals as part of recent maintenance. The seller notes that the hood has some scratches near the leading edge as shown in the photo carousel to the right.

Yellow 15-inch wheels are wrapped in new Arizonian Silver Edition AS 195/65 tires that were installed in July of 2021, according to the service records for this car.

The two-seat cockpit is fitted with black vinyl bucket seats with cloth inserts, matched to the door panels, dash, and carpeting. The majority of the interior was removed under the seller’s ownership to treat surface rust and install soundproofing throughout. The seller notes the drivers side door latch currently does not work and that the speakers are not working and the photographed Becker Mexico head unit is not included. The dash has some wear underneath the carpeted upper mat as shown in the photos. The trunk contains a spare tire.

Instrumentation includes a 150-mph speedometer, 7K-rpm tachometer, and a fuel gauge. Auxiliary aftermarket gauges for the oil temperature, clock, and voltage have been added in the center stack. The five-digit mechanical odometer reads 7K miles, although the true mileage on the chassis is unknown.

The mid-engined, air-cooled, and fuel-injected 1.7-liter flat-4 is accompanied by a handwritten maintenance log and some records. The injectors and fuel lines were serviced in August of 2021. The air filter was changed along with the exhaust system around the same time. The shift rod bushings and coupling were replaced, as well as the battery at the same time the battery tray was treated for surface rust. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a floor-shifted 5-speed manual transaxle.

Photos showing the underside are available in the carousel. New brake hoses were installed in 2021 and the front struts have been replaced.

The sale includes service receipts, a handwritten maintenance log, and uninstalled vinyl graphics. The Becker Mexico stereo pictured is not included.

@PapaBear – I read that the car was in storage however with mileage of only 7738 on a 49 year old vehicle is unprecedented. Is there any other documentation to validate this mileage ? Thank you ...

no additional documents, but the condition of the engine, drivetrain and undercarriage indicates this is a fairly low milage car. Again, (to the best of my knowledge and the previous owner's) it's always been in California.

Hello, I have a few questions about the car. What is the best way to communicate with you. Thanks, John
