Vehicle Story

OVERVIEW

This 1959 Ford Thunderbird convertible was built on July 15, 1959, at Ford's plant in Wixom, Michigan. Under previous ownership, it received several new parts including the master cylinder and brakes. In addition, the generator, carburetor, top hydraulics, and other components were rebuilt. Features include whitewall tires, a power top, and power steering, brakes, and windows. Power is supplied by a 352ci V8 and delivered to the rear wheels through an automatic transmission. Refinished in red with a black vinyl top over a red leather interior, this second-generation Thunderbird is available now and comes with a clear Massachusetts title in the seller's name.

EXTERIOR - FEATURES

As color code Z on the trim tag shows, the exterior was originally finished in Platinum Metallic. According to the seller, it received rust repair and a respray in red. Exterior features include chrome bumpers, bright trim, a hood scoop, a driver-side mirror, and tail fins. A power-operated black vinyl top with a plastic rear window and rebuilt hydraulics covers the passenger compartment.

EXTERIOR - WHEELS AND TIRES

This car rides on a set of steel wheels with full covers and whitewall tires.

INTERIOR - FEATURES

Inside, this Thunderbird offers red leather bucket front and bench rear seats with white piping, a red center console and dashboard, and matching door panels and carpeting. Metallic trim highlights the dashboard. The cabin is equipped with vent windows, a newer radio with an LCD display, and power steering, brakes, and windows. The trunk contains a whitewall spare tire and a patterned lining.

INTERIOR - GAUGES

Vehicle information is displayed on a gear selection indicator, 140-mph speedometer, and gauges for the fuel level and coolant temperature. The five-digit analog odometer shows 51K miles, which the seller states is an accurate figure.

ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION

Under the hood is a 352ci FE V8 that produced 300 horsepower when new. An automatic transmission sends the engine's output to the rear wheels. Under previous ownership, the battery and dual-channel master cylinder were replaced and the brake booster, radiator, water pump, generator, and carburetor were rebuilt.

UNDERCARRIAGE

The brakes and brake lines were replaced under prior ownership. Additional photos of the underbody can be seen in the carousel to the right.
