1970 BUICK GS 455 STAGE 1 4-SPEED

OVERVIEW

This 1970 Buick GS 455 Stage 1 was put through a $65,000 restoration by Then & Now Auto of Marietta, Georgia. It is powered by a numbers-matching 455ci V8 backed by the original four-speed manual transmission. This GS is reportedly one of 664 four-speed hardtops built and one of 54 out of 2,865 cars built with air conditioning. In addition to the factory A/C, features include power steering, manual brakes, manual windows, and a factory AM/FM stereo. Finished in Sherwood Green with a white vinyl roof over a white vinyl interior, this GS 455 Stage 1 is available now and comes from the selling dealer with restoration documents, the build sheet, a reproduction window sticker, Sloan Museum documentation, a post-restoration appraisal, a copy of the 1977 Maryland title, and a clear title.

EXTERIOR - FEATURES

During the restoration performed by Then & Now Auto in 2006, the exterior was refinished in the original color of Sherwood Green (paint code 48). Features include chrome bumpers, functional Ram Air hood scoops, GS Stage 1 badging, and rocker and wheel well trim. The original Tuxedo Black paint (code 19) on the roof has been replaced with a white vinyl roof.

EXTERIOR - WHEELS AND TIRES

A set of 15-inch chrome Buick Rally wheels with black accents is wrapped in G60-15 Goodyear Polyglas GT tires.

INTERIOR - FEATURES

The front bucket seats, rear seat, rear trim, and door panels are upholstered in white vinyl, which replaces the original black vinyl surfaces (trim code Z188). Features include black carpeting, a floor-mounted manual shifter, manual windows, power steering, power brakes, a black dashboard with a black top pad, factory air conditioning, and a factory AM/FM stereo.

INTERIOR - GAUGES

A 120-mph speedometer, a 6K-rpm tachometer, and gauges for the fuel level, oil pressure, and coolant temperature are located ahead of the driver. The odometer reads 628 miles, which reflects the mileage accrued since the restoration was completed. The true mileage on this vehicle is unknown.

ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION

Power is provided by a numbers-matching Buick 455ci V8 Stage 1 engine and backed by the original four-speed manual transmission. Features in the refinished engine bay include a correct GS 455 Stage 1 Ram Air air cleaner, chrome valve covers, and a dual-circuit master cylinder.

UNDERCARRIAGE

This Buick was originally equipped with an independent front suspension and a solid rear drive axle. During the body-off restoration, the underbody floors, frame, and suspension components were cleaned and refinished in matte black. Suspension component tags, correct color brackets, spiral shocks, and fasteners were used during assembly. Dual exhaust outlets exit at the rear. Braking is provided by manual drums.
