OVERVIEW
This reportedly award-winning 1968 Ford Mustang Sprint has been with the seller since 1999 and was restored in 2002. It is powered by a rebuilt 302ci V8 that has been bored out .030 and equipped with an Edelbrock Performer Series 600-cfm 4V carburetor, an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake manifold, a Wolverine/Blue Racer hydraulic camshaft, and other upgrades. Features include a rebuilt C4 Cruise-O-Matic three-speed automatic transmission, Flowmaster Super 44 mufflers, power steering, front disc brakes, Bilstein shocks, an AM radio, and 15-inch styled steel wheels with BFGoodrich tires. According to the seller, everything, including the engine, transmission, and suspension parts, has been restored or rebuilt and the interior, exterior, and undercarriage are in Grade 1 condition. Finished in Candy Apple Red over a black vinyl interior, this first-generation Mustang comes with restoration receipts, a framed specifications sheet, the original owner's manuals and assembly manuals, a dehumidifier, uninstalled spare/surplus parts, a jack, a fire extinguisher, jumper cables, and a clear Mississippi title in the seller's name.
EXTERIOR - FEATURES
As part of the restoration completed in 2002, the exterior was refinished in two-stage PPG Candy Apple Red and equipped with either new or restored trim and a new reproduction trunk lid. When possible, new old stock (NOS) parts were used. Aside from the newer windshield, all the glass is original. According to the seller, there is a minor rock hit on the front windshield trim, a small divot above the rear bumper, and a few minor imperfections in the paint directly over both rear wheel wells.
EXTERIOR – WHEELS AND TIRES
The 15-inch wheels are reproductions of 1965 Mustang styled steel wheels and come wrapped in 225/60 BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires that have fewer than 1,000 miles on them.
INTERIOR – FEATURES
The interior is furnished with new black vinyl bucket seats with headrests up front and a bench in the rear, matched to the new door panels, dash, carpeting, and headliner. Dynamat sound-damping material was installed underneath the carpet and behind the headliner. New firewall insulation was also installed. Additional features include power steering, a Grant steering wheel, a hump-hugger center console, custom pony floor mats, original-style front speakers, a pair of custom speakers in the rear package tray, and a restored AM radio that was retrofitted with all-new parts including an FM option and a rear auxiliary port for MP3 and iPod functionality. In addition, a 16-gauge custom fire-stopping steel plate was installed behind the rear seat for safety. The trunk compartment has been fitted with matching black carpet and underlayment. The full-size spare in the trunk matches the wheels and tires on the car. All original decals are in place as they were off the assembly line, according to the seller.
INTERIOR – GAUGES
Instrumentation consists of a 120-mph speedometer and gauges for the fuel level, coolant temperature, oil pressure, and voltage. The voltage gauge is inoperative. The five-digit mechanical odometer reads 39,358 miles, but the seller states the odometer probably rolled over. However, the engine has accrued approximately 5,000 miles since it was rebuilt. The actual mileage on the chassis is unknown.
ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION
This Mustang originally came with a 289ci V8 but that was replaced with a 302ci V8 that comes paired with a rebuilt C4 three-speed automatic transmission. The engine was bored out .030 and equipped with an Edelbrock Performer Series 600-cfm 4V carburetor, an Edelbrock Performer RPM aluminum intake manifold (1,500-6,500 RPM), a Wolverine/Blue Racer hydraulic camshaft, and reproductions of the 289ci V8 high-performance exhaust manifolds. Other components include high-performance lifters, Chevrolet 350 stainless steel cylinder head valves, Jack Roush Chevrolet 350 valve springs, Chevrolet 350 titanium valve spring retainers, COMP Cams Chevrolet 350 1.6 roller rocker arms, and PBM Chevrolet 350 chrome-moly 6.850-inch, 5/16, .080W pushrods. The points system was replaced with electronic ignition and a new battery tray was professionally welded into place. The seller states everything else in the engine compartment is new and all original decals are in place as they were off the assembly line. They report there is a minor leak from the main seals.
UNDERCARRIAGE
The steering is power-assisted and comes equipped with a new power steering cylinder and control valve for tighter steering. Bilstein shocks and front disc brakes are present. The brake pads were replaced and have fewer than 5,000 miles on them. All new brake lines and fuel lines were installed along with a new gas tank. The reportedly original rear end has 2.79:1 gearing. The undercarriage has been undercoated for rust prevention. Two years ago, the front and rear suspension parts were replaced. That list of new hardware includes the:
- Inner and outer tie rod ends
- Tie rod sleeves
- Sway bar bolts
- Sway bar bushings
- Upper and lower ball joints
- Upper control arm shaft kit
- Lower control arm bushings
- Strut rod kit
- Idler arm assembly,
- Cotter pins
- Rubber grease seals/boots
- Zirc fittings
- Ball joint bolts
- All nuts/clamps
- One-inch lowering front coil springs
- Rear leaf springs
- Eye bolts, nuts, bushings, and shackles
ADDITIONAL DETAILS
According to the seller, this car has never been driven in the rain and has never been washed. Instead, it has always been cleaned with a quick detailer and waxed and stored in a garage with a dehumidifier running constantly. The seller reports this Mustang has received several awards, including multiple Best of Show trophies. The sale includes restoration receipts, a framed specifications sheet, the original owner's manuals and assembly manuals, a dehumidifier, uninstalled spare/surplus parts, a jack, a fire extinguisher, and jumper cables.

@FJ – Any evidence of pre rust , rear quarters or trunk area ? Thanks fj ...
During restoration the only visible rust I saw was the battery tray area and trunk lid. Battery tray area was cut out and professionally replaced. The trunk lid was replaced with a new reproduction. There are a few bubbles barely visible in the middle of both rear wheel wells right above the mouldings. Took pictures but so small wouldn't show up on pictures. There was no rust there during restoration so not sure if there was contamination before paint was sprayed or if it's rust. Appeared about a year after car was painted in 2002 but hasn't got any worse since.
