Vehicle Story

OVERVIEW

This restored 1957 Ford Thunderbird is powered by a reportedly numbers-matching, rebuilt 292ci V8 backed by a rebuilt three-speed manual transmission with a newer clutch. Features include a matching removable hardtop, a newer soft top, a rebuilt AM/FM radio with an internal amplifier, and several newer parts. Finished in Colonial White over a black and white vinyl interior, this first-generation Thunderbird is available now and comes with an affidavit of ownership from the original owner, an owner's manual, a service manual, a car cover, and a clear Ohio title.

EXTERIOR - FEATURES

Originally finished in Thunderbird Bronze (code Q) and equipped with a Colonial White hard top (code E), this car and its original hardtop were repainted Colonial White during the frame-on restoration completed in the early 1990s. Features include chrome bumpers, a hood scoop, side fresh air intakes, color-keyed rear wheel skirts with stone guards, and a fender-mounted antenna. The seller states that the soft top was replaced in 2020.

EXTERIOR - WHEELS AND TIRES

A set of 14-inch black steel wheels with full hub caps is wrapped in 205/75 BFGoodrich Silvertown radial whitewall tires.

INTERIOR - FEATURES

The seller states that the interior is original. Features include a black and white vinyl bench seat; a floor-mounted manual shifter; manual windows, steering, and brakes; a rebuilt radio converted to accept FM signal and equipped with an internal amplifier; and a black padded dashboard.

INTERIOR - GAUGES

A 140-mph speedometer, a 5K-rpm tachometer, a clock, and gauges for the fuel level and temperature are located ahead of the driver. A non-tachometer drive distributor has been installed and the factory tachometer is currently not working. According to the seller, all gauges have been cleaned and rebuilt. The odometer reads 34,092 miles, which the seller believes to be accurate.

ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION

Power is provided by a reportedly numbers-matching, rebuilt 292ci V8 and backed by a rebuilt three-speed manual transmission equipped with a clutch that was replaced in 2021. During the restoration, all underhood sheet metal was refinished in Colonial White. Features include polished cast aluminum valve covers, an upgraded non-original carburetor, a correct air cleaner housing with a chrome lid, and an Optima Redtop battery. An alternator has been installed and the steering box has been rebuilt. The seller states that this car received a complete service six months ago that included the replacement of light bulbs, seals, and transmission seals.

UNDERCARRIAGE

This Thunderbird was factory-equipped with an independent front suspension and a solid rear drive axle. Braking is provided by manual four-wheel drums. The suspension has been upgraded with adjustable-height rear shocks. The exhaust was replaced and new brake system hardware was installed in 2018.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

The seller will include an affidavit of ownership from the original owner, an owner's manual, a service manual, and a car cover as part of the sale.

@vtltudor – Thank you for your questions. The Thunderbird has always been a Georgia car. My father purchased the car in 2018 from GA and moved it to our climate controlled car storage facility located in Ohio. ( hence OH plates) After my father passed away in 2019, I moved the car to Atlanta. When I read your question about bubbling and rust on the rear quarter panel, I kinda freaked, because I’ve never seen rust on the car. So I took a look at what you saw. There is no bubbling or rust on the quarter panel. I did find asphalt and some rock chips on the passenger side quarter panel. So I understand what you saw and why you questioned it’s history. If this doesn’t satisfy your concern. Pls contact me again. Again thank you. ...

Ottomeekman Sorry, I didn’t satisfy your request for pictures of the undercarriage. This what I have and they are accurate with the exception of new exhaust tail pipes (OEM) added after they were taken. Again I apologize.

@Ottomeekman – Same as Zzyzx,, and needing better under car pictures, the bubbling on the rear quarter, rocker and rust spot on lower door jamb and the rust on the frame are concerning for a dry storage car. Plus the Ohio tag on a Georgia car. ...

@Zzyzx – How can the interior be the original when the code on the data plate (XJ) indicates bronze ? How can the affidavit state that in 1957, when it was purchased (new?), it was a white Thunderbird, when the data plate code indicates a bronze body with white hardtop (code QE) from the factory? ...

Let me explain. Neither the exterior color, or the interior is exactly same as original. As it was explained to me, by the second owner, the car was purchased originally as a graduation gift for the first buyers daughter. The daughter wanted a white car with black and white interior. So the original owner had the car painted white . The second owner didn’t tell me about any changes to the interior. So when I said the interior is original, that was an error on my part. it makes sense that the first owner may have changed some of the interior to match the white exterior. Also I know the seat cover and carpet were replaced by the second owner during the restoration. So I apologize for the mistake. The door cards, seat frame, dash gauges, etc. are original.
