Vehicle Story

OVERVIEW

This 1929 Ford Model A roadster replica was built under contract with Ford in 1980 by Shay Motors Corporation in connection with the 50th anniversary of the model. It underwent restoration later in life after being shown in promotional events for decades. Power comes from a 1980s-era 2.3-liter inline-four mated to a four-speed manual transmission. Features include a new 12-volt electrical system, a CD player, full gauges, front disc brakes, and Coker whitewall tires. Finished in ivory with a newer black retractable top over a black vinyl interior, this Model A replica is now offered with a clear Florida title.

EXTERIOR – FEATURES

This Model A replica was assembled in 1980 by Shay Motors Corporation during a limited-production run as a tribute to the original Model A. It was reportedly first issued to Valvoline when new. The body is coated in ivory paint and equipped with black fenders. A new black cloth retractable top with side curtains was installed when the vehicle had 4,700 miles on it. Exterior features include promotional door decals, a side-mounted full-size spare tire, dual-bar chrome bumpers, a chrome radiator shell, running boards, a rumble seat, and a luggage rack with an included black case.

EXTERIOR – WHEELS AND TIRES

Black spoked wheels are wrapped in Coker whitewall tires that were installed along with the soft top. The matching spare was put on at the same time.

INTERIOR – FEATURES

The interior is fitted with black vinyl seating for the interior passenger compartment bench as well as the pop-up rumble seat at the rear. A CD player has been added.

INTERIOR – GAUGES

Modernized instrumentation includes a 140-mph speedometer and auxiliary gauges showing the coolant temperature, fuel level, voltage, and oil pressure. The five-digit mechanical odometer reads 6,455 miles, which the seller reports to be true and accurate.

ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION

The 2.3-liter inline-four was reportedly sourced from a 1980-model-year Ford and is said to run and drive well per the seller. The electrical system runs on 12-volt power and reportedly received more than $20,000 in all-new wiring. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a floor-shifted four-speed manual transmission.

UNDERCARRIAGE

Stopping power comes from disc brakes up front and drums in the rear. The seller reports the frame does not need to be restored.

@Marcoump – Thanks for the information. I never said you can replace parts from a Model A ...

The word 'replica' implies that it can be fitted with actual Model A parts. If you read the Shay history, you would learn that the Shay Model A was never referred to as a 'replica', but always marketed as a reproduction and is now considered a classic in its own right as a "Second Generation Classic Car" (SGCC) and can be entered in contests (AACC) under that category. Shay was the 6th largest automobile manufacturer in the United States at the height of its production.
