Vehicle Story

OVERVIEW

This restored 1939 Studebaker Commander is powered by a fuel-injected 1996 LT-1 V8 engine backed by a 4L60E four-speed automatic transmission. Upgraded features include a Vintage Air climate control system, a tilt steering column, a VDO gauge set, electric wipers, a Painless Performance Products wiring package, and a Fatman Fabrications Mustang II-style front suspension assembly. Additional features include power front disc brakes and power rack-and-pinion steering. Finished in California Grapetone Maroon over a taupe cloth interior, this all-steel Studebaker is available now and comes from the selling dealer with a list of installed parts, Studebaker Drivers Club awards and trophies, the original 1939 license plate, photos and memorabilia, and a clear South Carolina title.

EXTERIOR – FEATURES

During the three-year restoration, the steel body was repaired and refinished in the original Studebaker color of California Grapetone Maroon. Features include chrome bumpers, chrome grilles, a split windshield, dual mirrors, black running boards, and a trunk-mounted license plate. The selling dealer states that all window glass is original to the car and all chrome pieces were polished or replaced. A full walk-around video can be seen below.

EXTERIOR - WHEELS AND TIRES

A set of 15-inch Buick Roadmaster wheels with chrome hub caps is wrapped in Coker Classic whitewall radial tires.

INTERIOR – FEATURES

The front bench seat and the rear seat are upholstered in taupe cloth. Features include manual windows, power steering, power brakes, a tilt steering column with a Grant wood-rimmed steering wheel and an automatic shifter, a Painless Performance Products wiring harness, and a glove box-mounted AM/FM/cassette sound system.

INTERIOR – GAUGES

A set of VDO gauges that includes a 120-mph speedometer and gauges for the fuel level, oil pressure, water temperature, and voltage is located ahead of the driver. The digital odometer reads 16,414 miles, but the true mileage on this vehicle is unknown. The selling dealer states that 16,000 miles have been added since the restoration was finished.

ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION

Power is provided by a fuel-injected 1996 LT-1 V8 engine and backed by a 4L60E four-speed automatic transmission. Engine bay features include aluminum valve covers, black Corvette-branded fuel rail covers, a Bosch electric fuel pump, a Howell engine management system, a serpentine belt engine accessory drive system, cast iron exhaust manifolds, a chrome brake master cylinder, and a chrome power booster. Recent service includes a major tune-up and the installation of a gel battery and a new alternator, water pump, and K&N air filter. In addition, the ignition, belts, and hoses have been replaced.

UNDERCARRIAGE

The original chassis has been modified with the addition of a Fatman Fabrications Mustang II-style independent front suspension crossmember, power rack-and-pinion steering, heavy-duty leaf springs, and a Buick Roadmaster solid rear axle with 2.56:1 gears. Braking is provided by power front discs and rear drums. A dual exhaust system with glasspack mufflers exits at the rear.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

The selling dealer charges a $125 document fee in addition to the sale price. They will include a list of installed parts, Studebaker Drivers Club awards and trophies, the original 1939 license plate, and photos and memorabilia as part of the sale.
