OVERVIEW
This 1978 Chevrolet Corvette pace car edition is one of the 6,502 cars made to commemorate the 62nd annual Indianapolis 500 race held on May 28, 1978. It has been driven 1,937 miles since new and is powered by an L48 350ci V8 engine backed by a TH350 three-speed automatic transmission. Features include air conditioning, power steering, power four-wheel disc brakes, and removable roof panels. Additional features include power windows and locks, a tilt and telescoping steering column, cruise control, an AM/FM/8-track stereo, and the Gymkhana suspension package. Finished in black and silver over a silver leather interior, this limited-production Corvette is available now and comes from the selling dealer with T-top bags and a clear title.
EXTERIOR – FEATURES
The black and metallic silver exterior features color-keyed urethane bumpers, red accent striping, hide-away headlights, a front spoiler, rocker trim, and color-keyed sport mirror housings with a driver-side manual remote. Additional features include mirrored removable roof panels, pace car door decals, heated rear glass, and a color-keyed rear spoiler. A walk-around video can be seen below.
EXTERIOR - WHEELS AND TIRES
A set of 15-inch polished aluminum Corvette wheels with red accent stripes is wrapped in 255/60/R15 Goodyear GT Radial tires.
INTERIOR – FEATURES
The bucket seats are upholstered in silver leather. Features include a center console-mounted shifter, power steering and brakes, power locks and windows, air conditioning, a tilt and telescoping steering wheel, a Delco AM/FM/8-track stereo, a rear storage compartment, heated rear glass, and a retractable cargo cover.
INTERIOR – GAUGES
A 140-mph speedometer and a 7K-rpm tachometer are located ahead of the driver. The center stack houses a clock and gauges for the fuel level, coolant temperature, oil pressure, and battery. The odometer reads 1,937 miles, which the selling dealer reports to be accurate and documented.
ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION
Power is provided by an L48 350ci V8 engine and backed by a TH350 three-speed automatic transmission. Engine output was 185 horsepower when new.
UNDERCARRIAGE
This Corvette was factory-equipped with the four-wheel independent FE7 Gymkhana suspension. Braking is provided by power four-wheel discs. The exhaust system exits at the rear through dual outlets.

Happy Friday Car Lovers and welcome to the final 6 hours of the auction for our 1978 Corvette Pace Car! First of all, I'd like to thank everyone for their bids. As most of you know, a "true" survivor example of this particular car can be difficult to find. Being an avid Corvette lover, I've seen hundreds of the 1978 Corvette Pace Car's go across the Auction Block selling anywhere from very low dollar amounts to over $100,000. I would put this car up against even the highest selling examples. I'd have no problem entering this car in the NCRS judging events that are coming up in June. In fact, I'd go so far as to say I'd enter this car in the Benchmark Class. The only non-original item that is not with this car is the battery. Well, were getting closer too the close of this auction for what I'd consider one of the best unrestored 1978 Corvette Pace Cars I've ever had the pleasure of owning. As most know, it's one thing to have low miles, but then another to have well preserved low miles. From the pictures of the undercarriage to the preservation of the original paint, this collector took great pride in maintaining their cars. Even the original tires have been well preserved. One note about the tires. While I've personally driven the car as you can see from the video, I would NOT recommend driving the car for any great distance on 45 year old tires. If anything, I'd dismount and save these tires should for judging events, or special car shows. As the NCRS Bloomington Show is coming up in a few months, this car would be an excellent example to enter and have judged!
