Vehicle Story

OVERVIEW

This 1965 Plymouth Barracuda two-door fastback has been driven 5,581 miles since a mechanical overhaul. Power comes from a 273ci Super Commando V8 mated to a three-speed automatic transmission and a limited-slip rear. Equipment includes AutoMeter gauges, Pioneer sound system, aluminum wheels and refurbished suspension. Finished in white over a red vinyl interior, this first-generation Barracuda is now offered by the selling dealer with an owner’s manual, spare parts, extra keys and clear Michigan title.

EXTERIOR – FEATURES

This Barracuda two-door fastback’s white finish is complemented by red pinstriping. Exterior features include chrome bumpers, dual sideview mirrors, wheel arch and rocker moldings, and Barracuda “Formula S” badging.

EXTERIOR – WHEELS AND TIRES

Aluminum 14-inch five-slot wheels are wrapped in newer Cooper Cobra Radial G/T blackwall tires.

INTERIOR – FEATURES

The interior is fitted with late-model red vinyl high-back bucket seats up front, a bench in the rear, and matching materials for the door panels and carpeting. Amenities include an aftermarket center console, embroidered floor mats, lap belts and a Pioneer audio system. The seller notes that there are some blemishes on the driver's seat.

INTERIOR – GAUGES

Full aftermarket instrumentation from AutoMeter includes a 120-mph speedometer, 8,000-rpm tachometer, performance indicator and supporting gauges for fuel level, oil pressure, coolant temperature and voltage. The digital odometer reads 5,581 miles, which is reflective of mileage on the completed build.

ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION

The 273ci Super Commando V8 has received a replacement fuel tank and new exhaust system. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a column-shifted three-speed automatic transmission and 8.75-inch rear end with 3.23 limited-slip gearing.

UNDERCARRIAGE

The shock absorbers, rear springs and sway bar have been replaced. Stopping power comes from disc brakes up front and drums in the rear. Photos showing the underside are available in the carousel.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

The sale includes an owner’s manual, spare parts and extra keys. The selling dealer has provided a video with a start-up sequence and a walk-around both inside and out.

Has the back glass been replaced or is it original to the car

@karl – First and foremost, this is a VERY NICE vehicle !!! I have some questions: (1) In photo #115 (Driver's Side door is open) it looks like the weather stripping separated --> see the upper left-hand corner of this photo. Is this the case, and if so, have you been unable to repair this? (2) Is there ANYTHING on the vehicle that is not working or malfunctioning? Examples: all major Mechanical and Electrical systems, Windshield wipers & Washers; back-up lights, turn signals, interior lights, door locks. Basically anything ( no matter how "minor") that you are aware of. Are there any leaks anywhere along the windshield, rear window or door windows? Do the doors, hood and trunk lid close properly (meaning, flush) and open without sticking (meaning, their fit is flush/within original specs)? (3) To your knowledge, did this vehicle ever undergo a Frame-Off Restoration? How long have you (as a dealer) owned the vehicle/how long has it been in your possession? (4) Do you know how many previous owners had this vehicle? (5) Was this vehicle ever in any type of accident/collision, or involved in a Comprehensive Coverage Insurance Claim? (6) If my bid is the highest and meets your Reserve, would you agree to make the final sale subject to a satisfactory Vehicle Inspection by a mutually agreed-upon Professional Classic Vehicle Inspection Service (at my expense)? I could even add an additional amount to be paid if the Professional Classic Vehicle Inspection Report shows EVERYTHING (mechanical/electrical/all of the "minor" items) about this vehicle to be in good/excellent condition. (7) I do not see any rust in any of your numerous photos ... Are you aware of ANY Rust ANYWHERE on this vehicle, including rust that has been covered/hidden with undercoating? (8) In your opinion, could this vehicle make a 1,200 mile road trip without incident? Honesty is best ... if your truly do not think so, that would not necessarily be a deal-breaker. Your opinion/assessment matters. (9) VERY IMPORTANT: Can this vehicle run on today's blends of gasoline (up to 10% ethanol, perhaps even 15 % ethanol ... I would doubt this) If not, what fuel does this vehicle require wrt gasoline grade/Octane level. Doe it require the old (think 1960'era) High-Test? Could today's gasoline blends - say the highest octane currently sold (most places 93, some places 95) be used if I added Octane booster? You may think this is a stupid question, but "real" gas is very hard to find, and if it is available, it is extremely expensive. In short, I need this information to determine if additional modifications must be made to the engine, fuel line(s) et al. Your timely responses are genuinely appreciated ... and would be well worth your attention ($$). Best wishes to you ... and to every serious bidder. (HINT: The boss says I can buy this toy (doesn't care about the cost - SURPRISING!) ... I think most everyone out there knows what I mean. Most Respectfully, Karl ...

Karl, The performance badge is a tribute for appearance purposes and yes it has some floor patches underneath that have been fixed. Overall the car is VERY nice and clean. If you want to get it inspected before the auction ends that is fine with us; BUT the winner of the auction will be charged a fee from AutoHunter and is expected to move forward with purchase, NOT start the buying process IF the car is won. If the car doesn't sell, happy to connect with you directly, but with the attention that we are getting on the car I am thinking it will sell. -Jeremy

One more question: Is the engine the 8-cyl. 273cid/180hp 2bbl or the 8-cyl. 273cid/235hp 4bbl Hi-Perf? I had assumed that, given the moniker "Super Commando" and the Formula S Badging it is the 235 hp, 4 bbl, Hi Perf, but I am finding conflicting information via internet searches (No, I am NOT using ChatGPT LLMS...). Kindly clarify asap, as the Hagerty valuations are obviously higher for the 235 hp, 4 bbl, and higher still for the Formula S -- See below, from https://www.hagerty.com/valuation-tools/plymouth/barracuda/1966/1966-plymouth-barracuda-formula_s?id=aCn1I000000CvJpSAK&vbeSqlId=124654&catalog=yes : From https://www.hagerty.com/valuation-tools/plymouth/barracuda/1966/1966-plymouth-barracuda?id=aCn1I000000DUbrSAG&vbeSqlId=91451&catalog=yes : 1966 Plymouth Barracuda Formula S 2dr Fastback 8-cyl. 273cid/235hp 4bbl Hi-Perf #2 Excellent condition: $29,100 <-- somewhere between this #3 Good condition: $20,400 <-- and this. Probably closer to this; my Auto Hunter and Classic Car searches over past several years show most vehicles with photos similar to those that you have included are #3. Although many sellers would disagree, my Vehicle Inspections have shown this to be true about 80 percent of the time. Most often, while modifications (addition of more modern stereo/speakers are nice and add value, said modifications cause the vehicle to be less "original," so this is usually the point of contention made with a Professional Classic Inspection/Appraisal. This is also why your detailed honest responses to my previous questions are critical to my final bid. #4 Fair condition: $14,600 1966 Plymouth Barracuda 2dr Fastback 8-cyl. 273cid/235hp 4bbl Hi-Perf: #2 Excellent condition: $28,100 #3 Good condition: $20,500 #4 Fair condition: $13,900 As I stated earlier, I may pay over my bid, depending on the Professional Classic Inspection/Appraisal Report. You will definitely receive AT LEAST this amount (plus extra $ for your time/effort to market the vehicle). In the event that you do not receive your Reserve Amount, please contact me at my email address provided to Auto Hunter, as I would still be interested in purchasing the vehicle. Thank you. ~ Karl
