OVERVIEW
This 1963 Mercedes-Benz 190SL convertible has reportedly driven 59,047 miles since new and was treated to a rotisserie restoration under prior ownership. It is powered by a 1.9-liter inline-four paired with a four-speed manual transmission and comes with a color-matched factory hardtop, a Becker Europa radio, BFGoodrich whitewall tires, and a double-wishbone front suspension. Finished in Signal Red with a black cloth retractable top over a light gray leather interior, this W121 190SL is now offered by the selling dealer with the hardtop, a vinyl snap-on convertible boot, and a clear California title.
EXTERIOR – FEATURES
This 190SL’s Signal Red paint was reapplied during a rotisserie restoration, and a matching removable hardtop accompanies the car’s standard-issue black cloth top. Exterior features include chrome bumpers with overriders, a driver sideview mirror, rear fender guards, and a single exhaust outlet.
EXTERIOR – WHEELS AND TIRES
Body-colored 13-inch steel wheels with color-keyed hubcaps are wrapped in newer BFGoodrich Silvertown whitewall tires.
INTERIOR – FEATURES
The cockpit is fitted with light gray leather low-back bucket seats, matched to the door panels and upper dash pad with contrasting black carpeting in the footwells. Amenities include a Becker Europa radio, lap belts, and a clock.
INTERIOR – GAUGES
VDO-branded factory instrumentation consists of a 140-mph speedometer, a 7K-rpm tachometer, and auxiliary gauges for fuel level, coolant temperature, oil pressure, and voltage. The five-digit mechanical odometer reads 59,047 miles, which the selling dealer asserts is an actual reading.
ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION
The rebuilt 1.9-liter M121 inline-four is fed by dual carburetors and was rated at 104 horsepower and 105 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a floor-shifted four-speed manual transmission.
UNDERCARRIAGE
The chassis employs a double-wishbone front suspension and rear swing-axles with coil springs. Photos showing the underside are available in the carousel.
ADDITIONAL DETAILS
The sale includes a color-matched factory hardtop, a trunk-mounted spare tire, and an ivory vinyl snap-on convertible boot.

Hi nice car , is the drivetrain original?
@CrownClassics – Sure.... 121 040 10023555 ...
Thanks for the quick response, seller. Very interesting and not at all surprising or uncommon. Mercedes made very few actual 1963 model year 190SLs (~100) because the primary emphasis was the production of the newly introduced 230SL model (~1,500 units). Very often, the 300/190/230 SLs (along with other European models) were registered in the US when they arrived, which could be up to years after actual manufacture date. This particular car appears (from the VIN sequence) to be an early 1962 manufactured vehicle. I know there were some slight stylistic differences between the mid- and late 1950s cars, but I'm not personally aware of any significant differences in the 1961-1963 cars.
