OVERVIEW
This 1959 Norton Dominator Model 99 is a British-built motorcycle that underwent cosmetic, mechanical, and chassis enhancements during a 2015 restoration. It is powered by an overhauled 597cc vertical twin-cylinder engine mated to a four-speed manual transmission. Features included staggered-diameter wire wheels, a magneto ignition system, drum brakes, Smiths gauges, and a newer exhaust system. Finished in silver and equipped with a black vinyl saddle, this Norton motorcycle is now offered by the selling dealer with a clear title.
FEATURES
A silver color scheme was applied to the reproduction bodywork and fenders installed during the restoration in 2015. Features include a front number plate, a no-rise handlebar, center and side stands, and newer lighting. The selling dealer notes discoloration on one of the stands from a former fuel leak as well as a small paint blister on the front of the fuel tank.
WHEELS AND TIRES
The factory 19-inch front and 18-inch rear wire wheels were overhauled and come wrapped in 90/90 front and 100/90 rear Avon tires.
SEATING
The two-up black vinyl saddle was replaced during the refurbishment process and features red piping.
INSTRUMENTATION
Smiths-branded instrumentation includes a 120-mph speedometer, 10,000-rpm tachometer, fuel gauge, and voltage gauge. The digital odometer reads 766 miles, but the actual mileage is unknown.
ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION
The 597cc OHV vertical-twin engine was overhauled in 2015 and features a Skip Brolund magneto ignition system, a newer exhaust system, and replacement wiring. Service in May 2023 involved the removal of the head to rethread the spark plugs, rethreading the left exhaust collar, a carburetor service, draining the oil sump and tank, and replacing the fuel lines. Power is sent to the rear wheel via a four-speed manual transmission and a drive chain.
CHASSIS
The conventional fork uses Race Tech internals and newer shocks are mounted to the swingarm. Braking is provided by drums both front and rear, with a twin leading-shoe design up front. The braking and suspension systems were serviced during the restoration in 2015.
