Vehicle Story

OVERVIEW

This 1983 Chevrolet El Camino is currently set up for eighth-mile drag racing with over $70,000 invested in customizing and upgrades. It is powered by a 350-hp shot nitrous-fed 388cid V8 engine backed by a TH400 automatic transmission with a 3500-rpm stall converter. Features include a TRZ rack-and-pinion power steering conversion, a tilt steering column, Aerospace Components manual four-wheel disc brakes, an NHRA certified ten-point roll cage, Kirkey racing bucket seats, and a lift-off cowl induction hood. Finished in a two-tone of Orion Silver and Poison Ivy over gray vinyl and cloth interior, this El Camino is available now and comes from the selling dealer with a CARFAX report, a Dyno sheet, receipts, cam specs, a cam card, and a clear title.

EXTERIOR – FEATURES

The exterior has been finished in a two-tone of Orion Silver and Poison Ivy. Features include a body-color front roll pan, a chrome grille and headlight trim, a lift-off cowl induction hood with hood pins, a body-color rear roll pan, an external electrical system cut-off switch, and battery connection lugs. A 15-gallon fuel cell with a sending unit, a nitrous bottle, and a battery are mounted in the bed. The rear wheel mini tubs and frame notch were installed by Outlaw Chassis in Omaha, Nebraska. The selling dealer states that a crack is present in the front driver’s side and the lower driver’s side fender in front of the wheel well. All light bezels, the grille, weatherstripping, and lights are new original GM NOS parts. 

EXTERIOR - WHEELS AND TIRES

A set of Billet Specialties Street Lite polished aluminum wheels, with 15" x 3.5" fronts and 15" x 10" rears, is wrapped in Mickey Thompson radial tires with 26/4.5/R15 fronts and 28.0/10.5/R15 rears.

INTERIOR – FEATURES

A pair of Kirkey racing bucket seats are covered in Kirkey gray tweed seat covers. Features include five-point G-Force camlock safety harnesses, manual windows, power steering, a tilt steering column, a Billet Specialties aluminum steering with a Poison Ivy grip, a floor-mounted automatic transmission shifter, a Poison Ivy 10-point NSRA certified roll cage installed by Outlaw Chassis in Omaha, Nebraska, and gray trim.

INTERIOR – GAUGES

A set of Autometer Ultralite gauges includes a 120-mph speedometer, a 10,000-rpm tachometer, and gauges for the fuel level, oil pressure, coolant temperature, and voltage. The odometer reads 0 miles but the true mileage on this vehicle is unknown. The last reported mileage of 68,400 was logged on the CARFAX report in October of 1991.

ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION

With $25,000 invested in the engine build, power is provided by a nitrous-fed 388cid V8 engine backed by a TH400 automatic transmission with a 3500-rpm stall converter and cooler. The engine was machined and assembled by Charley's Speed and Machine in Blair, NE and was run on their dyno, making 620-hp using 112 octane fuel. Engine bay features include Brodix Track 1 aluminum heads, black valve covers, a Brodix HV1000 aluminum intake manifold custom fitted for a Dominator carburetor, and port-matched heads and an intake manifold, that were ported and polished to stage 2 by Stiegmeier Porting Services in St. Charles, MO. A 300-shot Dominator ZEX nitrous kit that was custom jetted on a chassis Dyno to add 350-hp. Additional installed parts include a K&N air filter, a BG 280 electric fuel pump, a BG fuel filter, braided lines, AN fittings, Schoenfeld 1 7/8-inch to 3 1/2 inch tube exhaust headers with 3 1/2-inch turn downs, an aluminum radiator with an electric fan, and a CSR billet aluminum electric water pump. Engine features include a Dart Little M 350cid 4-bolt main block with a billet main cap upgrade, an Eagle ESP 4340 crankshaft with a 3.75 stroke, a set of Eagle ESP 4340 6-rods with L19 bolts and upgraded wrist pins, a set of JE Nitrous Dome Pistons, JE pro seal nitrous series rings. The MSD ignition parts include a crank trigger, a crank trigger distributor, an HVC2 coil, and a programmable digital 7 plus ignition. Additional upgraded parts include a  Comp Cams custom grind nitrous camshaft with a  .696/.704 lift, a set of Isky Redline roller lifters with EZ-roll upgrade, and a C&S Dominator-style 1000-cfm carburetor with Aerosol Billet fittings. This vehicle is set up for 1/8th mile drag racing and has been run using nitrous and went 5.92 at 121-mph and 1.27 60-foot time. It has run 6.30 off the bottle. A safety inspection was recently completed.

UNDERCARRIAGE

This El Camino is equipped with an independent front suspension and a solid rear drive axle. Upgraded front suspension parts include TRZ Motorsport tubular control arms, a TRZ manual rack-and-pinion steering conversion kit, and QA1 single adjustable coil over shocks. Upgraded rear suspension parts include QA1 single adjustable rear shocks, a TRZ Motorsports rear sway bar, a silver-powder-coated custom Chris Alston Chassisworks Fab9 solid rear drive axle with Positraction 4.10:1 gears, and Strange S/S 31-spline axles. Braking is provided by manual Aerospace Components four-piston billet drag brakes. 

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

The CARFAX report starts in October of 1991 and shows an accident-free history with ownership in Nebraska, Louisiana, Iowa, and Oregon. 

The selling dealer will include Dyno sheets, cam specs, a cam card, and engine build receipts as part of the sale.
