OVERVIEW
This one-owner 1983 BMW 528e sedan was purchased new by the seller at Ocean Motors in Santa Monica and has remained in California since new. It is powered by the original, unmodified B20B27 2.7-liter inline-six mated to a five-speed manual transmission and comes with a power sunroof, power disc brakes, and power steering. Finished in Sapphire Blue over a blue vinyl interior, this garage-kept E28 528e is now offered with service records, owner’s manuals, a clean CARFAX report, and a clear title in the seller’s name.
EXTERIOR – FEATURES
The reportedly rust-free Sapphire Blue body features quad headlights, bright bumper and window trim, bodyside moldings, a power sunroof, and a central rear exhaust outlet. According to the seller, this car received front-end damage and bodywork a few months after it was purchased.
EXTERIOR – WHEELS AND TIRES
Bottlecap-style 14-inch silver wheels are wrapped in 195/70 Toyo tires.
INTERIOR – FEATURES
The interior is furnished with blue vinyl manually-adjustable bucket seats up front and a bench in the rear, matched to the door panels, dash, carpeting, and floor mats. Amenities include power windows, power door locks, a radio, and a trunk-mounted tool kit. The seller notes that the cruise control is inoperative and the air conditioning does not blow cold.
INTERIOR – GAUGES
Instrumentation consists of a 150-mph speedometer, a 6,000-rpm tachometer, and gauges for the fuel level, coolant temperature, and instantaneous fuel economy. The six-digit mechanical odometer reads 335,442 miles, which is in line with the most recently recorded mileage figure of 335,182 logged on the CARFAX report in June 2022.
ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION
The M20B27 2.7-liter inline-six was rated at 121 horsepower and 170 lb-ft of torque when new. It has an erratic idle when cold, per the seller. An oil change was performed within the last 3,000 miles, the radiator hoses have been replaced, and the CARFAX report indicates that the air conditioning system was serviced in summer 2022. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a console-shifted five-speed manual transmission.
UNDERCARRIAGE
Stopping is performed by power disc brakes.
ADDITIONAL DETAILS
The accident-free CARFAX report begins in January 1992 and shows California ownership since new. A California emissions inspection was completed in 2021. Owner’s booklets and folders of service records will accompany the car.
Hi EricSaul, If you already have one of these you know how satisfying it is to drive. Sorry I could not get a video to you. I think you would be happy with it, but it is of course your choice. Compared to the modern 440i, I have kept the 528 forever, for good reason. Take care, Tom Budlong
@Budlong – HI EricSaul, I can assure you it does drive, and very nicely. I find it much more fun to drive than the year old Civic I now use for daily errands and common excursions, but fewer ‘creature comforts’. The suspension tells you BMW knew better when it was made, compared to now. I goosed it a couple times when I took it to the car wash for the photo shots AutoHunter used. So nice not to have a turbo in the inlet path. I had consigned it to the garage in favor of a 440i, which I did not like, hence the Civic. Goosing the 440i felt like I was asking it to do something immoral. Goosing the 528e appreciates the exercise. (My 1985 FJ60 Land Cruiser (600K miles) satisfies my need for the full whammy about road feel.) If you do get it and find you must pass it on after fixing the idle and A/C problems, please find a good home for it. Regards, Tom Budlong ...
I have the exact same car/yr/make/model. without seeing a video of it running/driving I have a hard time buying it. I hope you get good $ for it

@Budlong – Hi again, Ericsaul, Trying to get a video. Got one of the tach and speedo just after start, and idling for a while. But found the sound on the new Canon was silent. Old Canon has no memory card. Sun roof opens and closes nicely. I seldom use it. The upper control panel lights up some. It never did work well, giving false alarms or no info. Its cousin below the speedometer tells miles per gallon, but it is not damped, so it tries to follow sudden changes in fuel flow. New cars these days work nicely. I think those were an early attempt for such instrumentation. I have the same guess about the upper control panel. The information is either wrong, or insufficient. I ignored it from the beginning. Will get a memory card for the old Canon, so it will take videos. … Tom Budlong ...
Tom. Do you have a smart phone u can just make a simple video?
