1968 Chrysler Newport Convertible

OVERVIEW

This 1968 Chrysler Newport convertible is reportedly one of 175 produced with Sportsgrain faux woodgrain side trim. It comes equipped with power front disc brakes, power steering, air conditioning, and an AM/FM stereo. Power is supplied by a 383cid V8 paired with a TorqueFlite three-speed automatic transmission. Finished in Polar White and equipped with a matching power-retractable top over a black vinyl interior, this Newport is now offered by the selling dealer with manuals, promotional materials, records, a build sheet, a Chrysler Registry letter from Galen Govier, a snap-in convertible boot, and a clear Mileage Exempt title.

EXTERIOR – FEATURES

The Polar White (code W) body is accented with optional Sportsgrain faux woodgrain trim, which was offered on the Newport for just two model years. Approximately 80 percent of the paint is believed to be original. Exterior features include quad headlights, side mirrors, chrome brightwork, fender-mounted turn indicators, bodyside moldings, and rear wheel skirts.

EXTERIOR – WHEELS AND TIRES

Steel 15-inch wheels with deluxe wheel covers are wrapped in 235/75 Uniroyal Tiger Paw whitewall tires.

INTERIOR – FEATURES

The interior has six-way power black vinyl bucket seats with headrests up front, a bench in the rear, and matching trim for the door panels, dash, center console, and carpeting. Features include “Adventurer” badging, power steering, air conditioning, a push-button AM/FM stereo, power windows, an automatic headlamp dimmer, cruise control, a tilt/telescoping steering wheel, tinted glass, interior lamps, and three-speed windshield wipers.

INTERIOR – GAUGES

Instrumentation consists of a sweeping 120-mph speedometer, an under-dash performance indicator gauge, a clock, and auxiliary gauges for the fuel level and voltage. The five-digit mechanical odometer reads 46,809 miles, which the selling dealer believes to be accurate.

ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION

The 383cid V8 produced 330 horsepower when new and is fed by a four-barrel carburetor. An oil change and safety inspection have been performed. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a console-shifted TorqueFlite three-speed automatic transmission and a 3.23:1 rear end.

UNDERCARRIAGE

Braking is power-assisted with discs up front and drums in the rear. The dealer points out that there is some surface corrosion on the underside.
