1996 TOYOTA HILUX SURF SSR-X

OVERVIEW

This Japanese-market 1996 Toyota Hilux Surf SSR-X 4x4 is a right-hand-drive sport utility vehicle that shares body lines with the U.S.-market third-generation 4Runner. Following domestic importation, it was titled for United States road use by the selling dealer in Tennessee. Power comes from a 3RZ-FE 2.7-liter inline-four mated with a four-speed automatic transmission and a dual-range transfer case. Features include a four-inch body lift, color-keyed bumpers, LED lighting, newer 33-inch Yokohama tires, a Bluetooth audio system, stow-away rear seating, and several new engine, cooling system, and brake parts that were installed in 2022. Finished in two-tone red and black over a two-tone gray patterned cloth interior, this Hilux Surf is now offered by the selling dealer with a clear title.

EXTERIOR – FEATURES

The reportedly rust-free exterior has been repainted black over red, although some clearcoat blemishes are called out in the dealer’s video below. Features include color-matched bumpers, LED headlight bulbs, a mesh grille insert, a roof-mounted 41-inch light bar, a power moonroof with a sliding shade, fender flares, aluminum running boards, a roof spoiler, roof rails, and twin exhaust tips.

EXTERIOR – WHEELS AND TIRES

Aluminum 16-inch wheels with bead locks are color-matched to the body and wrapped in 33-inch Yokohama Geolandar A/T tires that were installed in 2022.

INTERIOR – FEATURES

The right-hand-drive cabin has two-tone gray patterned cloth bucket seats up front, a fold-flat bench in the rear, and color-coordinated door panel, center console, and dash materials. Features include tinted power windows, power door locks, power mirrors, power steering, a tilt steering column, charcoal Hilux-branded floor mats, air conditioning, a touchscreen CD/Bluetooth audio system with a USB charge port, front airbags, and a power tailgate window. The dealer’s video shows some cracking in the center armrest and a demonstration of the rear seats being folded down.

INTERIOR – GAUGES

Instrumentation includes a 180-km/h speedometer, a 7,000-rpm tachometer, and gauges for the fuel level and coolant temperature. The six-digit mechanical odometer reads 161,266 kilometers (approximately 100,206 miles), which the dealer asserts is accurate.

ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION

The 3RZ-FE 2.7-liter inline-four is said to be mechanically sound and was rated at 150 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque. Maintenance performed in December 2022 included an oil change as well as the replacement of the transmission fluid, battery, R134a air conditioning refrigerant, air conditioning compressor, coolant, radiator cap, air filter, serpentine belts, spark plugs and wires, distributor cap, and rotor. Output is channeled to all four wheels via a console-shifted four-speed automatic transmission and a dual-range transfer case.

UNDERCARRIAGE

This Hilux Surf has a four-inch body lift and features new front axles and new shock absorbers. The braking system received new pads, calipers, braided hoses, and slotted and drilled rotors in 2022. Handling is assisted by traction control.
