OVERVIEW
This 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu Sport Coupe is styled after the SS 396 model and receives power from a rebuilt 396cid big-block V8 mated to a TH400 three-speed automatic transmission and a 12-bolt Positraction rear end. Within the past year, a powertrain overhaul was completed which involved resurfacing the block, the installation of roller rockers, and the replacement of various components including the alternator, carburetor, lifters, rings, and more. In addition, the braking and suspension systems were refurbished in early 2023. Finished in Tuxedo Black over a red vinyl interior, this second-generation Chevelle is now offered with a clear title in the seller’s name.
EXTERIOR – FEATURES
This Chevelle was previously sold on AutoHunter in 2022 to the current owner. A restoration and a repaint in the original color of Tuxedo Black (code 10) were completed under prior ownership in 2012. Features include SS badging, new T3 headlights, a driver-side mirror, white side striping, and a dual exhaust system. The windshield is cracked in the driver's line of sight per the seller.
EXTERIOR – WHEELS AND TIRES
Magnum 500-style 14-inch wheels with chrome center caps and stainless steel trim rings are wrapped in 225/70 BFGoodrich Radial T/A raised-white-letter tires.
INTERIOR – FEATURES
The interior is configured with red vinyl bucket seats (code 788) up front, a bench in the rear, and matching materials for the door panels, dash pad, headliner, and carpeting. Features include manual-crank windows, power steering, air conditioning, an AM radio, and SS-branded floor mats. The trunk contains a vinyl liner and a spare tire. In the 2022 AutoHunter listing, the air conditioning and radio were noted to be inoperative, but the seller reports the air conditioning, fan blower, and radio are currently functional.
INTERIOR – GAUGES
Instrumentation includes a 120-mph speedometer, a clock, a fuel gauge, and warning lights for the coolant temperature, oil pressure, and voltage. The five-digit mechanical odometer reads 39,927 miles, but the actual mileage on the chassis is unknown.
ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION
The 396cid big-block V8 features a chrome air cleaner, a four-barrel carburetor, an aluminum intake, and chrome valve covers. Power is transferred to the back wheels via a console-shifted TH400 three-speed automatic transmission and a 12-bolt Positraction rear end. The most recent mechanical service took place in November when the car received an oil change and a new alternator and battery. Over the past year under the seller’s ownership, the car received roller rockers and a resurfaced and machined block. Additionally, the following parts were either replaced or refurbished:
- Carburetor
- Fuel filter
- Lifters
- Rings
- Bolts
- Camshaft
- Cylinder heads
- Rear main seal
- Flywheel
UNDERCARRIAGE
Braking is power-assisted and comes from discs up front and drums in the rear. Service to the braking system over the past year included the installation of new hoses, rotors, calipers, wheel bearings and seals, drums, cylinders, and spring kits. In addition, the idler arm, bushings, and rear control arms were replaced.
