OVERVIEW
This 1954 Mercury Monterey Special Custom Coupe has logged 4,974 miles since the completion of a restoration that included new paint, a new interior, and mechanical repairs. It is powered by a 256cid Y-block V8 backed by a three-speed automatic transmission. Features include power brakes with a dual-circuit master cylinder and power steering. Finished in black over a red and black vinyl interior, this Monterey comes from the selling dealer with an owner’s manual, receipts, vehicle documentation, restoration photos, and a clear title.
EXTERIOR – FEATURES
During the restoration, the rust-free body was finished in the original color of black, according to the selling dealer. Features include chrome bumpers, hood scoop trim, a fender-mounted antenna, dual rearview mirrors, body-color rear wheel skirts, and rocker trim. A walk-around video can be seen below.
EXTERIOR - WHEELS AND TIRES
A set of 15-inch red steel wheels with full hub caps is wrapped in 215/75 Diamond Back Auburn Premium whitewall radial tires that were installed in September 2020.
INTERIOR – FEATURES
The cabin is furnished with a red and black vinyl front bench seat and a matching rear seat surrounded by red and black vinyl door panels and trim. Features include manual windows, power steering, a red vinyl armrest with cup holders, and an AM radio.
INTERIOR – GAUGES
A 110-mph speedometer and gauges for the fuel level, oil pressure, temperature, and generator are located ahead of the driver. A vacuum gauge is mounted under the dashboard. With 4,974 miles added since the restoration was completed, the odometer reads 4,974 miles but the true mileage on this vehicle is unknown.
ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION
Power is provided by a V-161 256cid Y-block V8 and backed by a Merc-O-Matic three-speed automatic transmission. Engine bay features include finned aluminum Edelbrock valve covers, an Edelbrock four-barrel carburetor, and a chrome air cleaner housing. An oil change was completed in 2023.
UNDERCARRIAGE
This Monterey was factory-equipped with an independent front suspension and a solid rear drive axle. Stopping is performed by power brakes. A dual exhaust system exits at the rear.

@Lulu4years – What was the mileage prior to redoing the car ...
I do not know that, as a car from an estate, there is no one to ask either.. Thanks
@ray401 – Do you have the original air cleaner and valve covers? ...
We do not no. This is a car from an estate and comes with what you see. Thanks
@jonesy – Was the 256 cu.in. Y block a Mercury only engine? I'm not familiar with that size, Ford was 239,272 & 312 to my memory. Is the intake manifold the stock 2barrel with an adapter for the Edelbrock 4barrel carb? Thank you! ...
Here is something I found online.. Appears only 1954 and it had a 4BBL carb.. Wiki "The original Mercury Y-block, introduced for the 1954 model year, displaced 256 in³ (4,194 cc). Advertised as the "V-161" engine, it ran a bore and stroke of 3.625 x 3.1 in. The compression ratio was 7.5:1, and the rated power was 161 hp (120 kW) at 4,400 rpm. Torque was 238 lb⋅ft (323 N⋅m) at 2,200 rpm.[3] The engine breathed through a Holley model 2140 (4V) carburetor. The 256 in³ version of the Mercury Y-block was only available in 1954 models and was replaced by the 292 in³ in 1955.[3] The 256 was also used in some F100s in 1955 depending on the production plant location and was also installed in law enforcement sedans." Thanks
