OVERVIEW

This 1968 Pontiac GTO Hardtop Coupe is powered by a numbers-matching 400cid V8 paired with the original rebuilt three-speed manual transmission, according to the seller. Features include hideaway headlights, power steering and brakes, factory air conditioning, the Ride & Handling Package, and a Safe-T-Track differential. Finished in Solar Red over a Parchment vinyl interior, this Pontiac comes with the Protect-O-Plate, PHS Historic Services documentation, additional vehicle documentation, and a clear title in the seller's name.

EXTERIOR – FEATURES

The reportedly rust-free body is finished in the factory color of Solar Red (code R). Features include a color-matched Endura front bumper, hideaway headlights, a fender-mounted antenna, wheel well and rocker trim, and a chrome rear bumper.

EXTERIOR - WHEELS AND TIRES

A set of 15-inch Rally II wheels is wrapped in BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires.

 INTERIOR – FEATURES

The cabin is furnished with Parchment vinyl (code 224) front bucket seats and a matching rear seat surrounded by Parchment vinyl door panels and black trim. Features include manual windows, power steering, a black center console-mounted three-speed manual transmission shifter, black loop carpet, an AM radio, and factory air conditioning.

 INTERIOR – GAUGES

A 120-mph speedometer, a clock, and a fuel gauge are located ahead of the driver. The odometer reads 79,012 miles, but the true mileage on this vehicle is unknown.

ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION

@Copple – Hello, Yes, you are exactly right in that it came from the factory with the bulletproof Ford Dearborn top-loader transmission. Back in those days it wasn’t too uncommon for brands to interchange parts with each other. Pontiac supposedly chose it at the time in order to handle the torque. The transmission was pulled late 2019 (pictured)and rebuilt. ...

@RobbyME – Hi, love 400's! had a 68' firebird 400. had other 68' GM's. some had the vent windows + astro ventilation! I miss them both! the s**t worked! and if you had fac. a/c was great for astro V! I was 18 when I got these cars. to bad. still love these cars...but, these cars are 50 yrs. from what I had then. none of my cars had rot holes... just surface stuff! my dad had other ideas. my dad had company cars in early 60's on..mostly gm's. no place to put them...dad sold my 1st car..68' malibu blue w/blk. V.roof 2dr blk. int. 2-spd auto. w/307 2brl. grandma's neighbor's car in 73' w/13,369 mi! no discussions or any clue this was coming....24,000 mi. when he sold it in 75'. that car was new!! getting on in years still need a 400!! I never got a ticket in the 400 firebird....state police saw how I could drive..I was told that they would not chase me,just peel me off a tree. Oh! I got pulled over plenty! I wasn't even 20! no drugs then.. beer later on. had a gaurdian angel spin-out...dismantled the car. I'll be 68 next year. be safe. ...

Thanks for sharing some memories, Robby. I re-read your comments and sounds like some good times back in the day with your Firebird.!
