Vehicle Story

OVERVIEW

This restored 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T hardtop is one of 287 made for the U.S. market with a 426cid big-block Hemi V8 and one of only 150 produced with a TorqueFlite A727 three-speed automatic transmission. It comes equipped with a dual exhaust system, power steering, a woodgrain steering wheel, an AM/FM radio, a Rallye Cluster instrument panel, the Super-Performance Axle Package, and power front disc brakes. Finished in Plum Crazy Metallic over a black vinyl interior, this Challenger is now offered by the selling dealer with Galen's Registry paperwork, an owner’s manual, a broadcast sheet, a copy of the Chrysler Power magazine the car was featured in, a car cover, and a clear title.

EXTERIOR – FEATURES

The Plum Crazy Metallic (paint code FC7) exterior went through restoration under prior ownership and is accented with black R/T side striping and a black vinyl top (code V1X). Features include quad headlights, chrome bumpers, nonfunctional hood scoops, hood pins, an antenna, color-keyed mirror caps, drip rail moldings, and dual exhaust outlets.

EXTERIOR – WHEELS AND TIRES

Color-matched steel 15-inch wheels with dog dish hubcaps are wrapped in 225/70 front and 275/60 rear BFGoodrich Radial T/A raised-white-letter tires.

INTERIOR – FEATURES

The cockpit is furnished with black vinyl bucket seats up front, a bench in the rear, and matching materials for the dash, lap belts, headliner, and carpeting. Features include manual-crank windows, power steering, a simulated wood steering wheel, woodgrain dash trim, Challenger badging, a three-speaker AM/FM stereo, a heater, and a dome light. The trunk contains a space-saver spare tire and a jack.

INTERIOR – GAUGES

The Rallye Cluster (code A62) houses a 150-mph speedometer, an 8,000-rpm tachometer, a clock, and auxiliary gauges for the fuel level, coolant temperature, oil pressure, and voltage. The five-digit mechanical odometer reads 59,863 miles, although the true mileage on the chassis is unknown.

ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION

The 426cid big-block Hemi V8 is Period Correct to the car and housed in an engine bay that was detailed with the correct hoses, clamps, and other hardware during the restoration process, according to the dealer. An Optima gel battery has been added. Service was performed within the last year. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a reportedly numbers-matching column-shifted TorqueFlite A727 three-speed automatic transmission and the Super-Performance Axle Package's (code A32) Sure-Grip differential with 4.10:1 gearing.

UNDERCARRIAGE

Stopping is performed by power front discs and rear drums. Additional photos of the undercarriage are available in the gallery to the right.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

Galen's Registry paperwork, a broadcast sheet, an owner’s manual, a copy of the January 1991 Chrysler Power magazine the car was featured in, and a car cover will come with the vehicle. According to Galen's Registry, this Challenger is number 77 of the 165 U.S.-market 426 Hemi-powered 1970 Challenger R/Ts in the registry. A video has been provided that includes a narrated exterior walk-around, a look inside the engine bay, a start-up, and an interior equipment overview.
