This 1968 AMC AMX comes from a 14-year collection and has been cosmetically and mechanically refreshed since 2018, including new paint, upholstery, and clutch. Power is provided by a 390ci V8 paired with a 4-speed manual transmission, and the car is equipped with a dual exhaust system, fog lamps, and chrome wheels. This AMX is finished in red with dual white racing stripes and is offered with a clear Minnesota title in the seller’s name.
The body was professionally repainted in its original red in with white stripes approximately three years ago. Existing rust was removed, and replacement sheet metal was installed prior to the respray. Exterior features consist of chrome bumpers, integrated factory fog lamps up front, and dual exhaust outlets at the rear.
Aftermarket chrome 5-spoke wheels are wrapped in BFGoodrich Radial T/A raised-white-letter tires, while handling is managed by factory power steering and power brakes with new pads.
The interior is trimmed in all black and fitted with replacement carpet, a new headliner, and reupholstered bucket seats. Door panels are accented with faux wood grain, the original American Motors 5-button AM radio is retained, and the glass is factory-tinted.
Instrumentation is framed by a tilting 3-spoke steering wheel and consists of a 120-mph speedometer, tachometer, and gauges for coolant temperature and fuel level. The 5-digit mechanical odometer reads just under 27k miles, though true mileage is unknown.
The 390ci V8 came factory-equipped with a 4-barrel carburetor, and it was factory-rated at 315 horsepower and 425 lb-ft of torque when new. Power is transferred to the rear wheels via a 4-speed manual transmission and a 3.15:1 positraction rear end. A new clutch disc was installed within the last 500 miles.
Replacement shocks have been installed at all four corners. Additional photos showing the underside are available in the gallery.
The sale includes service records and documentation.
Ordered a tranny seal will replace it tomorrow
All gauges and lights are in working order. Speedometer does not read correct mph. The few times I have had it out this spring it appears the front transmission seal is starting to leak, otherwise dry underside.
any issues at all with your car? Oil leaks, gauges work, all electrics work?

I mounted the electric pump in the trunk so not to clutter up the engine compartment. I haven't located the before pics of the metal that was welded in. Floor pans were the worst , replacement quarter panels were used , small patches on the front fender dog legs, door skins are good. All paint and primer removed to the metal with 3M abrasive pads.
Do you have pictures from before the sheet metal work was done/being done? Or receipts for the work done? Something showing the work from 2018 would be useful. And I have to ask about the fuel pump in the trunk - why is it mounted there and not in stock location? Thanks in advance - you have been quick answering questions.
Planethoustonamx.com has some good explanations of vin numbers on AMC vehicles. From what I have researched this is a very early 68 production.
I have looked at a few AMXs and the VIN tag on yours appears different. The other tags were integrated into the dash board on top as was common in 1968; your tag appears to be a tab that extends from between window and dash, then over the dash pad. Do you have any other pictures of the VIN mount? Is it VIN tag that was added at some point? I would send a comparison picture but appears that is not an option on this site
@PMV – Was this car originally equipped with air conditioning? ...
No it was not
@carguy714 – can you please tell me what has been done to the engine; rebuild? tune up if so, when was this done ...
I was told it had been rebuilt when I bought it 14 years ago. Could not verify. Runs strong, doesn't smoke or use oil. Had it on a dyno a few years ago, puts out about 225hp to the rear tires. Eldebrock shorty headers, new excellerator pump in carb, valve cover gaskets, points replace with electronic module, plug wires. Externally the engine is stock except for the headers and air cleaner.
