This 1978 Ford Mustang II is a single-family-owned, California-blue-plate example powered by a 302ci V8 paired with a 3-speed automatic transmission. It was originally purchased new by the seller’s mother in August 1977 and has been well-maintained, including a recent engine and transmission rebuild and a replacement battery. The car is finished in Silver Metallic with a vinyl roof over a black interior. This Mustang II is offered with a clear California title in the seller’s name.
The body was professionally resprayed in Silver Metallic in 2010, and it features a factory-optioned black vinyl half-roof, removable tilt moonroof, and single exhaust. A California car from the start, there is no evidence of rust per the seller.
Aftermarket Cragar 14” aluminum wheels are wrapped in 205/70 Michelin Defender tires, and both power steering and power brakes are equipped.
The interior is trimmed in reupholstered black vinyl with matching door panels and new carpet. Features include a center console with storage, woodgrain applique dash trim surrounding the gauges, working heater and air conditioning, an AM/FM head unit wired to a trunk-mounted remote CD changer, and a locking glove compartment.
Instrumentation is framed by a 2-spoke steering wheel and consists of a 120-mph speedometer, 6k tachometer, and gauges for oil pressure, fuel level, voltage, and coolant temperature. The 5-digit mechanical odometer shows approximately 48k miles, but the seller reports that it has rolled once.
The original 302ci V8 was rebuilt within the past 8k miles, and the battery was replaced in February 2020. Power is transferred to the rear wheels via a rebuilt C3 3-speed automatic transmission.
Additional photos showing the underside are available in the gallery.
The sale includes a Haynes repair manual, and the seller indicates that this vehicle passes California smog inspections.

Update: This Mustang passed smog this morning. The gentleman who performed the test (his family owns several smog check facilities in the area) stated it was “an easy pass, no issues” and he also said, “I’m around a LOT of old cars, and this is by far and away one of the cleanest ones I have ever been in.” While driving to the smog check, it stopped another set of folks on the street, mid sentence, who stared and watched it go by. It was also coupled by a smile a thumbs up.

@Trayc – Thank you Rebecca. I hope you are correct about the change in model year smog exemption. It has been 1975 far too long. The state is killing the classic auto market. ...
It certainly hasn’t been doing it any favors lately. One mod we always wanted to do to this car was change out the carburetor. The stock carburetor is still in place and at least it’s still clear for CA.
@RebeccaN – Hello! Happy Good Friday! Yes, the vehicle was smog checked in September 2020 as part of the registration process and passed with no issues. Per CA law, we’ll take it to be smog checked again prior to sale of the vehicle, likely Monday or Tuesday morning. It’s at the tail end of the exemption and there’s rumors it will be exempt before the end of the year (per DMV staff when we obtained registration). ...

@Dirtcity – Hi Rebecca Is the sunroof factory or aftermarket and installed a tlater date ...
Hello! I’m glad you asked. The moonroof is factory installed. My mother ordered the car from Ford in August of 1977 and the moonroof was a must for her. Little did we realize until a later how rare of a feature that really is. I’ve never seen another one with a moonroof. The car also has the Ghia package which was considered a luxury upgrade to the car. The moonroof is easy to remove as well and best of all... it has never leaked. Once upon a time, it had a sunshade, but the time and sunshine got the best of it. The moonroof is factory tinted as well.
